Ok, here's my opinion.
Are you racing or not? If so, have you raced before? If not, I suggest starting in a stock class. I run a Losi XXX-SCT, and I like it. However, there's others out there, and I think all are equally good, it's all about setups and skill.
Generally, you're looking at three classes for most tracks, Stock, Open (or Mod), and 4wd. In my experience, at least around here, the 4wd guys are a bunch of hacks. Put as much power as you can into your truck and slam your way around the track. Mods, or open, probably the best class. These guys seem to be a little more about control. Stocks, basically a bunch of kids, or rookies. I lasted all of three weeks in stock because I was too competitive to keep getting slammed into walls by 10yr old kids.
In any case, you can get any 2wd SCT for under about $250. If you go stock, check your local track rules. Here, at one track you can run only stock motors and tires, but they can be stock from any RTR truck, and at another track, you can run same rule for motors, but open tires. Best thing you can do is start stock, work on your gearing and setups, then bump up to the next class.
