just ordered a os tz for my revo and want to run the best possible fuel i can in it to make it last any ideas I'm leaning toward o'donnell 20% racing fuel only gonna run 20%
 
I run odonnel and love it. I have heard not to break engines in on odonnel but that what I'm breaking my collari in on...
 
yep i run O'Donnel 20% love every drop of it...also gauranteed to keep ur engine under 200 degrees...which means more engine life...and i ran it in my maxx and i tuned and it kept 195 to 196 all day long...and for some reason to me it helped my 2.5 engine hold a good tune and I didn't go through glow plugs except for one and thats when i broke my engine in...

On the contrary, running your engine below 200 can cause just as much damage as overheating. Try to get it to stay at least at the 210 mark. Too cold of an engine will not allow the sleeve to expand completely and cause premature wear on the engine. 195 is not too bad, any lower than 185 and it would be an issue.

As far as O'donnel, it's usually a love it or hate it following with customers. I tried it for a while and I wasn't too impressed with the fuel. Even ran it in 2 different engines and wasn't impressed with the end results. Needless to say, I only broke the engine's in with it (RB V12 3port and Thundertiger 21R) I switched to 20% Byron's Racing fuel and haven't looked back ever since.

The temps stayed down but I performance was not a big gain at all, if there was any. I also didn't like the way it smelled and burned. Byron's burns a lot cleaner and the residue shows a more constant burn rate of fuel.
 
nope the guy at the lhs said keeping it under 200 degrees will give you a longer engine life and he races 1/8th buggies 36 weeks out of the year and he is the smartest guy around here with engines..and I'm pretty sure cause he races that much he knows what he is talkin about...
 
Got to go with diver on this one 200 is just to low of a temp..
Not enough heat will Not allow the sleave to expand properley.
Thus causing the piston and sleave to wear out quicker then normal..
IMO 240 to 265 270 is the best temps to run :2cents:
 
I also agree with Diver and Zandor. No internal combustion engine runs at it's peak unless it's at a proper temperature. At 200 or below, the engine will be very inneficient and also blubbery rich which will NOT produce the proper power or RPMs.

If you also did your break in at those temps, you NEVER broke it in. Be prepared for problems down the line, and a very short life on your engine.

I race as well (on-road) and I do know what keeping an engine at that low of a temp will do. I have seen it "mushroom" the top of the piston because the sleeve was not run at operating temp. All my engines are highend italian engines and each and every one of the manufacturers of my engines(Mugen, RB, Novarossi) say to hit 190-210 for break-in. Optimum power vs wear temps, will range from 220-250 degrees. Anything less and it'll be rich and will run like a e legged horse. Not very efficient at all.

As for tuning, I tune by ear and performance not by temp. I just use the tempgun to make sure I'm not too far off base, especially when I go to another racetrack with a different elevation and ambient temps and humidity are variable from morning to afternoon.

Buggies, MT's, Touring ... engines are engines and there is a minimal operating temp to ensure "normal wear" which varies from engine to engine but the variances are only off by +/- 5 degrees.

If this guy works at the LHS and is recomending this to his customers, I'd really question his abilities. I am employed by my LHS as well (sponsored to race/sell parts/tune & setup cars/etc) whenever I race under their name. Not one of us (technicians at the store and/or sponsored racers) agree with what your LHS rep is telling you.

well if there is enough lubrucant in there it doesn't matter how hot and plus when engines run cooler means more power..so I have done this for a long time matter of fact for about 5 gallons on my RS4 and it had so much power and ran so good and held a good tune..so thats what ill stick with running and keepin it under 200....

But the performance could've been better ... I can pretty much safely assume that. Over 5 gallons (probably leaning passed 6) on the RB V12 sitting in my car and it can and does, still hang. 5 gallons is average life for an engine.
 
Recomendation needed for fuel brand for an OFNA .21 being used in T-maxx... This engine was bought used (1/2 gallon ran through it)..Not sure what brand was used. Can someone provide some insight? Tks
 
I just got some Odonnel 20% for my Revo. It was overheating above 300 and I couldnt tune it, the hobby shop owner put some Odonnel in my tank and after tuning it, the temps were way down. 240's on average. Needles to say, this is the fuel i'm buying from here on out. That traxxas top fuel just sucked in my engine, period.
 
I am running O.D 20% in my .18tm. Temps stay lower than 250 with tons of power. Truck is getting stronger and stronger after every tank.
 
i started off with blue thunder yrs. ago ,switch to odonnels ,all motors run cooler and hold a tune
 
I tried O'donnell's and didn't like it. I had a very good experience with Top Fuel, but no LHS around here carries the 33%. I'm now 30% Sidewinder Race blend and like it a lot. Plus, I like not having to use ARO.
