Now that I've cured my slipping flywheel issue (a new one was the trick!), so now I'm lookin into a nice clutch setup. Zero slip is the goal here, with long bell life. Anyone know of a good hard-grabbing clutch setup? I'd like to stick with a three-shoe (like the stock) setup, if possible.

Well Not sure on thelife of the bell but I loved the Mbx5 clutch on the Savvy using 1.1 springs. Its a 3 shoe set up still.

Next question, do you put the pin-end of the shoe to the right or to the left (leading or trailing)? I've always wondered what the difference in the two mountings are.

What are the benefits of the one without the X, vs the one that has the X over it?

edit; this is the stock 2 shoe from the .21 clutch, mine has the three shoe setup.

The clutch works by the engine spinning. If your shoes are on backwards you will only have the tip of the shoe hitting the cb(if they even open up) as compared to the correct way you have a bigger contact area.

I was thinking that with the shoes reversed, that they might engage a little more firmly....?

I used to do that on my maxx when I had it with the stock shoes. It would engage more firmly, but would deform the shoes in a short while which would cause excess slippage or binding.
