Bending JP1 support wire

Hey guys,

How in the heck to you bend the loop at the end of that support wire for the JP1 pipe? I almost broke a pair of pliars trying to bend it. This is starting to frustrate the you know what out of me. Why can't they put a loop in it at the factory? Or at least give you some instructions as to how. Any ideas guys? The pipe is going on an X term pro. Thanks

What wire?

The spring that goes around the engine? The springs that hold the manifold to the pipe? Both should come with hooks at the ends, because the spring metal is almost impossible to bend on your own.

Your might have been a defective one, whatever it is.

Be a little more specific, I just put a jp1 on a prospec and did not have any problems bending the wire. If you can post a pic that would help even more.

Sorry for the lack of details guys... still a newbie.

Actually I talking about the support wire that goes up through the end of the pipe and then held in place by a grub screw. The other end (the end that needs the loop) attaches to the chassis and then held in place by a screw that comes up from the bottom and then has a aircraft nut on it. I hope this helps. Ohh, you mean the L shaped thing. Mine was an L shape in the box. I didn't need to bend it any, and I don't think I could because it's really, really hard metal.

I had to drill out a little of the chassis part, because it the hole wasn't wide enough. On the Storm, the chassis mount for the thing is a little peice of metal that screws to the chassis, and it has a hole on the top for a set-screw and a hole drilled through the side for the L shaped pipe peice.

What buggy are you installing it in?

The Buggy it is getting istalled in is an XTM Xterm Pro. The wire is in an L shape already too, but I need to get one end put into a little loop so that I can attach it to the chassis. This is the part that is frustrating me. The stock support is in an L shape and has a little loop in it already but it is too small to use with the JP1 or I would just use that one. I have to put a little loop at the end that attaches to the chassis so that I may attach the new support wire. Thanks again for all of your help. I am hoping someone has had to do the same... I am about to go crazy....

Ohh. That's a problem. Does the mounting bracket on your buggy allow a straight pin to go in somehow, maybe spinning it? I tried to lookup a manual for the buggy but my quick goodle searching only got me a basic overview, nothing zoomed in close enough to see the mounting bracket.

The design on your buggy sounds like a good idea, because the thing will never slip; but not all pipes are the same size.

You might be able to bend the end by putting it in a vice. Perhaps if you cut a very small slice out where you want it to bend, you might be able to get it (slice where you want the inside of the bend to be.) Heating the thing up might help too - but they use really high temps (glowing metal..) to bend those things I think.

take 2x4 and screw 2 wood screws real deep bot leave about an inch above the wood....screw em about 1/4" apartplace the wire perpendicular to the line the screws would make if they were connected...then brace the end of the wire against one screw and bend it around the second screw...this is like a jig used in framebuilding or metal working....then trim off the extra bit and even out your wire......this might sound hard but it's very easy to do if you doo a search for metal working jigs I'm sure you would see something similar...

If the wire is as thick as I think it is, and you want the bend right at the end, you've got no chance!

You need a tuned pipe mount, basically a small alloy turret that bolts to the chassis with one screw, and has a hole running through it that the end of the pipe hanger wire fits into. A grub screw in the top of the turret keeps the wire in place.

with the jig you bend the wire with some excess andtrim it to where you want....I keep a few lengths of piano wire handy for these things...hobby shops sell it pretty cheap, about 4bucks for 4 ft......then you can bend it to what ever you need.....
