Hell, I have even used a bench vise to squeeze a pair of cutters through a hardened screw when I couldn't do it with my hands.

Hell, i've done that before... Though, the vise bent my pliers and shot the cut off piece flying into my arm... But it worked! I thought about using some gunpowder

To prevent that from happening in the future, throw a large towel over the cutters. It will deflect the shrapnel down toward the workbench, instead of letting it fly randomly.
