I'm buying one tomorrow for my mammoth. I put a center diff in it and the poor OS 21 RG just doesn't have enough grunt to push it with more than a 12T spur in it, which is slow.

My LHS is selling them for $99. I was curious if anyone here had any prolonged experience with that engine. Was/is it a good or bad experiance?

Thanks.

I hear that for the price they are a good mill. You will get more then your moneys worth at that price. Its less then dealer cost.

I believe RCX has a Dyno on it.

For just a few more $$ you can get the .32

Anywhere I've seen the 32, it's closer to 200. I think the cheapest I've seen it was 170. I think I'll be happy with the power of the 28. It puts out more than the HPI 28 from the savage. At least according to the x-dyno on a side by side comparison.

I was looking more for dependability and tunability. I've never had good luck with composite type carbs.

I've been shopping for a few weeks and was trying to get another SH 28 like the one I have in my savage. Tons of power and it has the aluminum carb. The new SH 28 has a composite carb and the old one is tough to find.

I've had two picco/omega 21 comps (bought one used that felt almost new) and both tuned like crap (composite carbs). And of course, the trx 2.5 and 2.5r...

I've just had better luck with aluminum carbs. Less binding and less leakage.

The fact that they are selling them so cheap makes me wonder how good they really are. They have a dozen of them on a shelf. A month ago when I was there, the sticker price was 160. Now 99? After reading in a few other forums about Axials support and customer service, if I do have a problem, they seem to stand behind their product.

Olds I might know where you can get the old sh .28, I think he paid 130 for it and never used it. Let me know if your interested.

Well, I bought it. I installed it in my mammoth. Had to change all my linkage which was a PITA. Wasted an hour there...

Took it out, put a sock over the head (it's 50F degrees here), primed it and it started on the first pull.

Drove it around slowly trying to get the temps up for the first tank. Took about 4 minutes, most of which at WOT, but it was so rich it barely moved. Temps only got up to 110. Let it cool down to 70F with the piston at BDC, ran it again after leaning the HSN about 1/4 turn. This time it got up to 125. I leaned it a bit more for tank three to get the temps up to 180.

At about 500cc's of fuel, it started to open up a little better and clear its throat on an extended WOT run. Around 700cc's, it was spinning all four tires on pavement and idling smooth.I ran around 900 cc's of fuel through it so far. Temps were around 220-230 through the last couple of tanks and it was screaming. It's still a little muddy in the middle, but that got better and better with each tank.

All in all, a pretty decent and easy break in.

BTW, my mammoth is a single speed with a center diff using 50K oil with 13T/65T gearing. I could probably get away with 14T or 15T, but I need to get a new clutch. I'm using mugen shoes and they suck. They are only about 3 quarts old and they have been constantly dragging for the majority of this breakin.

HMMM, I know some people who swear by the Mugens. Which ones are they? Glad to hear it may be turning out to be a good mill.

How about an update on this engine......How do you like it?

Unfortunatly, it got cold before I ran a lot of fuel through it.

I've only put about 3/4 of a gallon through it. It has pretty decent power and throws the mammoth around like a rag doll. It seems most of the power is down low in the RPM range, but it does wrap through the RPM range pretty fast. It seems to hold a tune well and it starts easy. I don't think I'm seeing full power yet. I bought a new set of bearings for it though. Others said that the bearings didn't last long and it would start leaking out of the front main. It hasn't started that yet.

I don't think I'll run it anymore until next spring though. Beings that it's so new, I don't want to damage it in the snow and cold. Besides, I have my revo that I can bash around in the snow with the original 2.5R engine that I don't care about.
