ok, i am finally sick and tired of my damn pos dell computer. it doesn't do anything i want it to and just doesn't work. so, i am wondering if anyone here has any experiance with apple computers. i'm almost positive i want of them, adn i just wanted to here what everyone here had to say about them. i'm probably going to buy the 12" powerbook. alos, if anyone knows of any good sites to go to about them, that'd be great. (besides for apple.com lol)

thanks a ton

Welcome to the dark side. I run a G4 Powermac, and a G4 Powerbook 12". Both are now running OS 10.3 (Panther) and I really like working on them and with them. OS X takes a little getting used to if you're comming from a Win background, but it doesn't take long to get up to speed.

Just as a point of referance, I also build PC's and am A+ and Microsoft MCP certified, so I'm not just MS bashing cause I run a Mac. The only things I have to complain about the mac are the lack of off the shelf software (like at bestbuy) and some hardware availability and pricing. The good news is that the G4 towers are comming down in price and will accept most IDE hard drives and standard SDRAM upgrades (non-Apple).

And as for the powerbook 12", it rocks. I have a Sony GRX with the 17" screen, and it's a monster compared to the PB12. Also, the integrated 802.11g and bluetooth are nice.

I bet all the Mac people are glad they spent the extra money now that this new "Sasser" virus is wrecking PCs everywhere. That's one nice thing about Macs... there's no one to write viruses for them!! HA.

Actually there is an underground for ahem, illegal activities aimed at Mac. It's just easier to mess with MS.

What doesn't your Dell do that you think an Apple will do?

well, my dell crashes nonstop, and now that i'm starting to get into digital photography adn video editing, it completely sucks ass. takes forever to do the smallest task. keep in mind that this isn't a super old computer. it's about 1 1/2 yrs old, 2.4 ghx windows xp w/512 mg ram, so its not exactly obsolete, which is why i'm still kind of hesitant to replace it. the powerbook costs a lot of money, so if i buy i'm going to be totally broke for a while (i'm only 15, so i have a limited income, still better than most my age).

thanks for all the responses

on the issue of speed. macs are not lightning fast. intel is actually faster.. so speed shouldnt be considered. but macs are stable. anyways... if your comp keeps crashing you might want to clean up junk or reformat it.

I can see the poop hitting the fan any time soon in this thread.

Some goofy commedian appl/mac/pc videos are coming to mind. Oh the horrors!

And I'm with HB, what Sasser virus?!?!

Its all in prevention man, prevention!

and to clear the air on Mac viruses, there are enough of them to worry about. And as the Mac base of users grow, so will the viruses. People are not writing viruses so they can get notariaty by impacting a dozen home users, they write them to impact what billions of home users are using.

Did I say dozen? I meant 2 dozen.

lol

I couldnt resist, I am VERY SORRY! In advance.

Thought you said you had a mac?!

I have a dell 4550 2GHZ, 1G ram, 2 80G HD's running XP with two user accounts. The only problems I've had is that it doesn't like my flatbed scanner and my wifes palm software. Anyone know a fix for the palm?

i know they're not as fast as pc's...in normal daily tasks. in things like movie editing and photo editing, they are faster, i've tried them out myself. and either way, i'm just tired of my dell always crashing nonstop, having at least 20 various errors of some sort everyday. i'm absolutely sick of it...i want my computer to work, not to fight against me and make me spend 20 minutes on what sgould be a 5 minute job.

please, tell me how theses errors can be fixed. i would LOVE to know. reinstalling the os (or anything that involves wiping out my harddrive) is not an option

I'm not going to even get into the great which is better PC or Apple debate here.

In order to make your machine more capable in the image and video department, the first thing I would do is get some more RAM. 512MB is good, but a GB or more is better. That will help with the speed issues (a little).

Also, onboard storage. The more hard drive space the merrier when it comes to video handling. I have about a Terabyte worth of hard drive space that I work with when it comes to editing videos. Makes things go a lot easier come production time.

As for the differences between Macs and PCs, that can be debated until the cows come home. Bottom line is that different people prefer different things based on their experiences. PCs and Macs can both do the same things with equal proficiency. Macs are designed as art based computers (meaning they are built to handle images, video, and the like) and are ideally suited for handling applications of a graphic nature. PCs are primarily designed as office computers and handle those type of applications quite well. Over the past few years both machines have made great strides into the others arena in order to attrack a more diverse crowd. You can now find PCs that handle graphics on the same level as Macs and Macs that handle office applications on par with PCs.

The problem comes in distribution. PCs own the market and thus control the hardware and software supply. You can find Mac stuff if you know where to look, but as Error mentioned...selection is not great, diverse, or huge at the local computer stores (Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.)

I personally run PowerMac computers at home/personal use and the Navy provides me with medium to high end Dells at work. I prefer the Macs.

They're awesome at contracting digital VD, gotta love them macros.

Registry, what registry.:stick:

but i'm just tired of the whole windows interface, it's given me way to much trouble for way too long. i'm going mac as soon as i get the money:jet:

Well, you could get a sparc... they are designed kind of like a mac and the processers work kind of the same.

Sorry, that's what we used to run here at work, then we went to dell p4 quad processors. A guy that used to work here went to a different company and all they had were sparc's. He was relatively high in the food chain pretty quickly there and was given a sparc to use at home to connect to his office... man was that thing fast.

...what Sasser virus?!?!

Its all in prevention man, prevention!

There's some new internet worm out that was just discovered a day or two ago. It's called "Sasser." What sucks about it is it doesn't spread by clicking and opening emails, like most worms, it just spreads on it's own. It only attacks machines running 2000, NT or XP that don't have the latest Microsoft updates. My mom's school was hit by it yesterday. Every single computer in her school crashes and reboots on their own. I think they had to unplug them, LOL.

It is all in prevention. As long as people keep their Windows updated and have some kind of firewall, they're normally in good shape.

LOL...his post was sarcasm at its finest. His point, no need to worry about viruses with proper preventative measures. I am fairly certain he is well aware of and very informed about the Saseser virus. Thanks for taking the time to explain it anyway...

Better have started saving last year or the year before. Macs are not as inexpensive as their PC counterparts; although as Error mentioned, the G4 towers are coming down in price.
