Just grabbed a factory sealed Team Associated Hoonitruck from Facebook marketplace… it’s fun to drive, but it doesn’t really “hoon” all that well. I’m looking for advice on a set of tires with less traction, but I’m not sure I want to go all the way to hard plastic drift tires…

I run the truck almost exclusively on a sealed blacktop parking lot, and I would like to drive the truck like Ken used to drive the real thing (RIP 🙁).

Any suggestions on what to look for?

Wrap the tires in ductape or electrical tape? Maybe try 2 drift wheels and 2 grip wheels? If it's not a walking surface or driving surface, spray some armor all. Best do that after pressure washing. It seals the concrete from getting dirty and may trap dirt in.

Those tires on that kit aren't drift tires unless you're on a surface like smooth concrete flooring like in a warehouse. I'd try some of the hard plastic tires for pavement.

With the stock motor and ESC you're limited. I used the hard plastic tires and filled the diffs with 20k rear 10k front. Why the put a brushed motor in a car that's meant to hoon is beyond me. I swapped the stock motor and ESC for a castle link sidewinder now running 3s. I also did the rally conversion kit which gave me the center diff. Allows for even more tuning.

I appreciate all of the input!

A few more thoughts from my end… I don’t feel like it’s too slow, I feel like it has too much traction… I don’t have any immediate plans to upgrade the motor/ESC. Maybe someday…

I don’t think the tape thing would work for me, for the reason stated in a previous post- even if I was able to wrap the tires perfectly I still think it would come off and cause problems… the half and half option (2 regular, 2 drift) is intriguing, but not sure how that would handle…

I have a banggood special mini cooper with hard plastic wheels, it’s like driving on ice! It’s great at sliding around, and it’s a fun challenge to control it, but I’m thinking I want something in between for the Hoonitruck. I want to be able to slide it around but not like it’s on ice. That being said if it’s a choice between the regular road tires and the hard plastic drift tires I will go with the hard tires…

Thanks again!

You have a build thread on that for us? 🧐

Plastidip on drift wheels? 🤣🤣

Maybe a little strip of tape on grip tires or a strip of something sticky on the drift wheels?

Finally decided to go ahead and get the drift wheels… works great, now I just need to practice so I can get better at drifting/sliding…
