anyone try steel sper gear

I have run a number of combinations of material for spur versus clutch. Hardened steel clutch bells are almost a requirement to guarantee that the clutch bell will not get destroyed.

Spur gears of any material can survive as long as the mesh holds true. Note, the as long as...part. If your chassis is tweaked; if the screws that help the chassis maintain its structural integrity are loose or misaligned; if the engine mounting is loose; if the spur is too tight or too loose; if the mesh isn't just right...the list can go on...BUT I think you get the idea. Setting the mesh is not only important it is a must. But your setting of the mesh must not be the only thing you do right.

Yes, a powerful engine and a dragging drive train can cause problems. No doubt or argument here. BUT I will state that you can properly compensate for these issues and allow your gears to play nice and last long.

I broke down and bought the robinson spur and clutch bell. and new clutch shoes today. I put them in and ran it, so far so good. I to have proline 40 series wheels with bowties on it, that may be part of the problem as well. The traction with those tires is mad.
