hi, I've just recently accuired a nitro car. I've just got the thing going as it needed a new starter cog. I've never even seen a nitro car running so I'm not clued up on these things. i can start the thing but i dont know what a nitro car idleing sounds like, its seems to me that its gone mental, really reving its nuts off. if they arnt supposed to run like this, whats it supposed to be like?? and how do i adjust it if not?? i assume the throttle is open too much.
cheers guys for anything you can throw my way

Can you tell us what kind of car it is? Or maybe post a pic if you have a digital camera. But no it should not rev high sitting at idle, try turning the idle adjust screw counter clockwise and see if this helps. A little more info on the car would greatly help.

yep sorry, not exactly sure on engine and that and i doubt anyone heres heard of it but its made by mantua (i understand that they are quite big, and tend to specialise in boat models) its a junior turbo if anyone is familiar with them. like i say i know nowt. il take some pics tomorrow but this is what it looks like fully built. http://www.mantua-model.si/vw.htm

according to the assembly manual the engine is a .21 force junior. and has an F stamped on it. comes under 1/8th cars in the product cataloge on http://www.mantuamodel.co.uk/pageview2.asp?cust=207.
thats all i know. serched for nearly 2 weeks for info and thats all I've found

well I've added pics now. its nowt special but when i had the oppotunity to get it i took it. I've wanted a proper R/C car for many years and decided to jump in at the deep end. its all up and running now, but its only had running on grass I'm going to have to find a large amount of tarmac to see what it can do. one last question (i hope) on the running side of things as like i say I'm very new to this. whats the initial take off like with one?? i seem to have a pause between pushing the throttle and the car getting a move on. should i be smoother with it?? or are my settings still off??

thanks chaps

Sounds to me like your lsn is still off. Is it bogging on takeoff or starving for fuel? If it sounds like it is bogging and choking on fuel turn the lsn to the right in very small increments and try it. If it seems it is not getting enough fuel, you will need to richen it up by turning the lsn counterclockwise. Is it spitting raw fuel out the pipe, smoking?

id say its bogging. it seems fine when it picks speed up. its got smoke as id expect from what I've already read. i think il pop outside and have another tweek

you asked for tips, so i have a few.

1.) fuel filter. most nitro cars don't come with a fuel filter. they are cheap and will save the engine should a piece of dirt get into the gas tank.

2.) temp gun. i assume you can get these in the UK. ideal engine temps changes from engine to engine, but a good, broad range for engine safety is anywhere from 200 - 260 degrees F.

3.) fuel. I have read some horor stories about some of the fuels sold in the UK. I don't know what is a good UK brand but Byran's seems to ring a bell. Talking to your local hobby shop (LHS), should clear up the fuel questions.

other then that, your best source of information is real people -- someone that can listen to the engine and tell you what needs to be tweaked. we do the best we can, but descriptions of a problem can only go so far.

thanks for the tips guys.

trouble is i dont know anyone with a R/C car. and i dont really have a LHS. although i can easily get the fuel as there is a R/C plane specialist near work. was running sweet yesterday, i adjusted it quickly this morning (for no particular reason)and now its shite. runs for a couple of mins and then tends to stall on full throttle and theres maybe a slight back fire type sound. really wish i left it as it was. damn fun tho while it lasts. :D. just an odd question, what would my car be classed as?? is it a buggy?? manual lists in the accesories section an optional buggy air filter housing, so i assume it is. could really do with the 4WD conversion too but aint gonna do that till i see this being more than just a fad
