I dont have a rc yet but I'm interested in a 1/8th monster truck... I am looking for the best out of the box RTR that i can find and will most likely upgrade later but i want the best now... I mean i dont want to spend $600-800 then wish next week that i had gotten a different truck... I have looked at Traxxas, HPI and Losi... right now I'm leaning on the Losi XXL... I want a truck that will handle the abuse, uses metal parts and has a good radio and the XXL seems to have a good start on that... Any Recommendations or comments ... pro or con ... for the best all round brand RTR?

I'm a little biased because i have a LST2 that i have made and XXL but converted to electric but IMO the LST XXL will be the best RTR monster truck you can find...

I have a revo, aftershock, savage and had a mammoth and t-maxx. All ended up very heavily modified.

For general rough and tumble bashing, the savage is the best.
For handling, the aftershock is great.

A revo is a good mix of toughness and handling. Now with all that I have, the revo is the one that gets the most wheel time.

Thanks for the info... i think I'm already sold on the XXL... one more thing... the new XXL... is that what they consider the LST2? when browsing parts lists, they refer to LST and LST2 .... but the XXL on the Losi website says its a bit bigger than the old model... when looking for upgrade parts... what model should i be looking at?

I have a savage Xl and the Losi xxl, I wouldn't dare to drive the XXL threw the stuff or off the big jumps, like i do my savage. I've cart wheeled my savage 40 feet, and it didn't stall nothing broke, or blew off. I have put 10+ tanks of fuel in each truck. The savage is amazing. I've not had any issues with either truck. But the losi radio is rather impressive. After driving both, within the same day, I would buy another savage over a Losi. HPI has probably the best customer support you will find.

This is just my opinion, Buy a savage.

Why not dare running the Losi like the savage? the losi looks like it has a lower center of gravity... you saying the savage isnt any top heavier than the losi?

everything on the xl seems to be tucked out of the way, or has a covering over it, the losi xxl has servos that arnt covered, I drove the snot out of the losi today, will say performance wise it was amazing. but the savage with big joes on it, well its just awesome.

My guess would be is that the XXL is more fragile than the savage. I know the LST2 was and it's not as long as the XXL which makes it weaker yet.

I wouldn't even bother firing up the XXL before I made a full skid pan for the bottom of it. I busted 4 or 5 sets of chassis rails in about 6 months which also bent/cracked the chassis deck of my aftershock. I ended up buying an HCR titianium chassis deck (got a great deal on it) and I made a skid plate that tied the center skid to the front skid. Haven't broken or bent anything on the chassis since I did that.

I ordered one today from Horizon, Should be here in a few days. I ran the losi up and down the road for a while again today. I do like the way the losi goes, just have to set the controller up better, the guy who i got it from didnt, and i never got the book on it. The savage today was a blast, we got 3 inches of snow last night.. so its pretty good time.

OK... so still undecided... lol... I started out with Traxxas revo... but i see traxxas is just the general walmart general sell to the masses type truck... not to imply that its not a good truck but i have always gone by the side line... down with the yankees... down with the lakers... and Phuck the damn pats in the butt... to get off my rant...
i was looking at the losi because it seemed to be the racing model... i want a monster truck... not to race but to play with... i want what racers would buy... i dont want to spend a 600 bucks and wish i got something else a week later... the money is not the object.... if i wreck it... not a prob... buy a new piece... i understand that every truck will eventually break and need parts... i am a marine engineer so the technical bs is not scaring me... getting back to the point... i looked at traxxas, i looked at losi.... i like the losi radio... now i am sold on the savage xl 5.9 .... it seems that hpi has the best overall aftermarket parts available... and seems to be a logical choice for a basher... which... basher being a new term to me.... is what seems to be what i am looking for... thats what i will do with it... i want a truck out of the box that i can run... i will add all the aluminum hop ups suspension wise... and hpi seems to have them readily available... in many diffferent color options... so i think i am sold on the savage xl....
NOW... radios... i like the option that losi has with the temp, speed and battery info on screen.... can i get the same upgrade for a savage? and 1 ho does that work? do i need all new electronics? and what are my options?

to the serious rc monster truckers.... if you had 2k... what would you buy, build? as a serious basher... with a flashy look... and i really want a grave digger body... i just love that truck

DX3S is probably the cheapest route to take to get spektrum with telemetry:

Will work with stock servos, but generally, most people upgrade servos to something stronger/faster than stock.

Would highly suggest a rechargeable hump pack regardless if you get a new radio or not:

Grave digger body:

Not sure if it's long enough for the XL though.

If I had $2K to blow on a truck, I'd go 1/5th scale and get a baja 5T of 5SC.

if i keep going bigger i will end up with a ford f 350...LOL... i started out looking at 1/10... now i am 1/8... now your talking 1/5 ... i think ill stay at 1/8 for now...lol... sexy pic there olds... lemme guess... sexy chick pic... i dont see her playing with boy toys... all the youtube videos show 30 and 40 something guys palying with these... i fit right in... in the 40s something range... your really a fat, bald guy ... huh? LOL.... cmon... admit it... or ill ask for your number

olds??? you work for horizon hobby??? that remote radio you show says it works for marine applications.... could i use it for a truck AND a boat??? i actually started this whole thing after seeing a boat... but it turned out to be 5' long and i think my homeowners association would have a stroke if i put a 5' boat on the lake off the golf course...lol... especially at 50 mph and the noise

I am a Harley rider and just cusomized my 2010 CVO that I've had for over a yr with an extra 15 k... money is not an issue for a new toy...LOL... if i wanted to go bigger i would buy a monster truck... I'm just looking for a toy... somehting small but fun... to piss off the neighbors... but not get kicked out

Nope. I don't work for them. Would be sweet if I did!

Kate Beckensale... Even my wife would make a run at her!

45, bald, overweight? WTH?!?!? Does this thing have a camera!?!?!?

damn... and i was hoping for a date...lol...

my wife is gonna be pissed when she finds out how much i paid in the end

ok olds... or should i just call you old man now? lol... you say revo gets the most time? i am upside down and sideways about what to buy... i was stuck on losi for the radio... but it seems that whatever brand each has is the best... lol... so it tells me that they are all pretty good... hpi seems to have the best selection of hop up parts... and the suspension on the revo seems kinda thin for the pics... are you saying that revo is as tough built as hpi savage? and i been looking at the savage xl 5.9.... should i go big motor or just the 4.6? isnt bigger better? and ... will it pull the front wheels off the ground?

From what I've read, the larger engine isn't that great. You'd probably be fine with the 4.6 and upgrade it to something more powerful and faster later on.

And yes, out of all of my rigs, my revo gets the most wheel time. My aftershock gets the least. Savage and jato get about the same. The revo is a very versatile rig and can be upgraded to take a lot of punishment. It handles pretty good and is a pretty reliable platform that holds up really well.

Now that I have one again, the things I'd have done before driving it would be:
RPM arms (tru-track in the rear is nice)
Traxxas wing kit
New era 3 point roll bar

Then upgrade the servos as you see fit.

I was already thinking of Aluminum for suspension ... the RPM parts appear to be molded plastic... are you recommending that brand for the price or are you saying that it is better or lighter than aluminum... i was looking at integy for hop up parts... also if i get the silver aluminum it looks chrome...lol ... whats your opinion on aluminum? is it really durable for bashing or am i looking at blowing a bunch of money for "looks" only?

are engines pretty much interchangeable? can you add different size to the same truck? and who puts out the better aftermarket engines?

i also see titanium skid plates...and plan on a roll cage of some kind ... when you say upgrade servos... what do you mean there? ... who has the best sevos? traxxas says theirs are waterproof... are they saying you can run the truck through water puddles ???

I've been going back and forth on the brand of truck... i wish i was home so i could just go buy the damn thing and get the 2nd guessing out of my head... little over a month to go... lol... ill go with a savage or a revo... they both seem to have easy access to parts... both seem to be highly recommended... i guess either is fine...

Most seasoned bashers shy away from alloy for anything that sticks out from the core of the truck. Generally, on impact, it either bends and is weakened or, it breaks harder to replace parts on your rig.

If RPM makes arms/towers for your vehicle and bashing is what you intend on doing, then it's the most cost effective durability upgrade over stock plastic. Racers generally stick with stock plastic as it's usually more rigid and that forces the suspension to do closer to 100% of the job it was intended. With RPM, their stuff is more rubbery (not like a noodle), so the crispness in handling can be lost. Bashers like me take durability over handling pretty much any day.

Integy = junk. Pretty to look at, but poorly executed on quality and fitment. Ok for a servo guard or diff case, but not good for anything suspension related or skid plate related. Integy is for shelf queens only (trucks you don't drive, otherwise known as expensive models).

Servo upgrade means faster and stronger. I like the hitec 985MG. A good balance of power/speed/cost, and they are pretty well sealed with o-rings. The only extra sealing I do is put some sensor safe RTV in the input wire boot to take up any gaps between the pigtail.

The savage runs a true big block. There are many to choose from that are solid performers from $150-$200. You can spend more, but if you buy a savage, bashing is where you will be spending your time. So, power, stable tune and compression longevity are the goals to shoot for.

The revo runs a small block style engine (narrower/shorter crankcase). There are quite a few aftermarket engines that are revo specific that will "drop in", but most are near the $200 mark. The stock 3.3 is a solid engine but can be hit or miss with durability.
