I got these rods at a local horror freight store

From the name alone you believe they are for joining aluminum.
Today I tried again. Clean new stock, first with propane[2000 deg.] And then with mapp gas [3700 deg.]. Mapp gas did a better job faster...and as you can see did not get it to stick to either piece.

Has anyone ever successfully joined metal using these low temp welding sticks??

Probably need to sand the aluminum to remove any coatings that aren't allowing it to stick...

Not sure if aluminum is similar to copper, but cleaning the metal and heating it to the right temp, then flux and solder...I'd thing that should work.

Its super hard to oxy fuel weld aluminum, I can't imagine this would be any easier. I picked up an ac/dc tig machine from Eastwood a couple years ago. It was like 700 bucks shipped to my door. I've used it a ton and its been awesome. Repaired an old IT400 case and I was super impressed with it.

No. A tig welder is the only good solution.
