Hi all iv been trying to make myself an ali tank ever since I got through 5 in a week.
Iv made mock ones out of cardboard and I even made a steel one. but when it came to the 1mm ali every one I asked said it couldn’t be welded.
So not one to be beat a few months later I went and bought myself a welder and set it up for ali and by trial and error taught myself to weld. I have just finished my first tank (which all in all has cost me about £1000 and god only knows how many hours in the shed) and would like some input on how u think I should attach it. Bear in mind this is also a mock tank and my first welding attempt so don’t knock it cuz they will only get better.

I can see two ways of doing it
1: add a bit of ali and make it bolt on the same as many tank guards do (or)
2: add two eyes and make it fit the same as a stock tank

here are some pic`s

p:s keep any stupid remarks to your self

Not to shabby at all! Now you just need to start selling a few...

I went with the cheaper (but obviously less cool) option of running a 125cc buggy tank.

Now that you can do it, how much $ and time does it take to slap one together?

it costs me about £15 GBP to make (the cost of a stock tank here)as for time I'm not sure yet as it was my first and i know i can do it quicker

new to the rc world,,what makes the ali tank better than the plastic one? It looks really cool.

It probably has something to do with this:

I had the same problem on my maxx, but like I said, I started using a OFNA buggy tank. I tried an aluminum one, but the stupid lid was a screw on instead of a flip top. It was a real pain to fill quickly, especially in the winter with numb fingers.

The only downsides to an al tank is that you can't see the fuel level. And it weighs a little more, for those who care.

Yeah, thats the only downside to it that i can think of. The unability to monitor the fuel level. I'm sure you can fabricate a level indicator on it somehow...if you want to. Just because its an ali tank doesn't make that impossible to do.

no some one already give me the idea of a nipple in the top and one in the bottum connected with a bit of fuel line and there the level indicator. as for wight it JUST heavier than a stock tank

thats kool shorty. who cares about weight on a mt its supposed to be heavy so when you jump and some stupid kids standing on the other side he gets some nice cuts and bruises and a lump on his head.

Yeah, that would work. Just take a couple 90 degree connectors and put one on top and bottom on a side of the tank with the fuel line connecting. Kind of like an industrial coffee maker gauge.

You would just have to put it somewhere out of the way but still viewable.

i was thinking maybe you could cut a strip of the clear hpi tank. cut a piece of the aluminum off the one and somehow attach the plastic to the hold in the aluminum but i dont there is anything that will hold it strongly and not contaminate the fuel.

Believe me, it's really hard to get something that will resist breakdown in nitro fuel, stick to plastic and stick to aluminum. I tried about 10 different epoxies and bonding agents... none of them worked for very long.

It was easier to get things to stick to the aluminum than the plastic. But when I had an epoxy that was made to stick to plastic, it didn't stick to the al very well.

He's better off going with the idea he found with the fuel fittings and tubing. It should work out pretty slick.

Besides, even with the plastic "window", he would need 2 in order to get light into the tank to see the fuel level.

very very good idea. Like olds said......as long as the tube is in a safe place it should be fine. I think that would be a great way to have a level indicator.

heres an idea for you..unless this is what you describing..i can't really describe so i threw a pic together in paint....

ahhh!! can see clearly now! verry smart idea. maybe you could use like one of those clear glass pipes. you know the kind you use when your trying to make a home made bong. you could use like a zip tie to hold it level to the tank or maybe fabricate some kind of bracket since you have started to weld.

I think he's best sticking with clear fuel line and the two 90 degree fittings. Glass or hard plastic will be prone to breakage and sealing problems. I think he's trying to avoid headaches and add the bonus cool factor by making the tank out of metal. Adding glass would just add the annoying factor back in.

But I'm pretty certain that's what he was talking about.

OOOOOOohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... that's pretty.

I had the huricane nitro/slimline tank for the maxx with a screw on lid. As far as I'm concerned, they are for show only. If it had a flip top, I'd still be using it, but as it was, I sold it for half of what I paid. It was just a pain to use.
