Can I use car engine lubricant oil instead of air filter oil? Does anyone ever use it?

It won't be as sticky and won't do as good of a job. Air filter oil is very sticky when it dries a bit. You can use motorcycle air filter oil though. That's what I use. I bought a 16oz spray can 3 years ago and still have 3/4 of it.

Thanks guys! I'll see what is available here. No Wal-mart here.

I'm sure there is, I just never take notice of them. I'll get some before the weekend. Thanks!

Just get some from a MX shop like Olds said. You'll get a quart that will last you a long time for the same price as one of those little 1 oz bottles. I also use PJ Foam Air Filter Cleaner, great stuff, dissolves dirt and turns them white!

I didn't think to get that when I picked up the oil... Now I have a reason to go back and drool on the motorcycles. I do use the PJ filter oil though. Pretty good stuff.

Any autozone / napa / pepboys should have a K&N filter cleaning kit which has both a large bottle of filter cleaner and and aerosol can of filter oil. It'll last a lifetime for rc's and costs about $9

K&N is too much for what you get. Also, I don't think the oil is as thick and sticky. Coach, you may not be doing all you can stop dirt.

Hmm well thats not so good. Is there a big difference between the stuff for mx vs. high performance auto? I guess I need to have a look in my engine.....

K&N filters are more paper like. MX and RC filters are a dense foam. If you tried to put MX foam air filter oil on a K&N I think it would ruin it. The K&N filter oil is very light if I remember right. Look down the filter neck and see if you have any crud in it. You may be alright, but thick and gooey is the way to go.

I use Marvel Mystery oil.......works great....but after your "gooey" comment there Jet, I am wondering if I am not doing all I can...as mystery oil is a bit thin. Seems to collect the dirt.

Comments??

i just use oil from my local LHS, i bought it about 2 years ago and it's not even half empty.
Is it right that after a days running you air filter foam should have mud all over it?

Talon, I know a lot of guys that use Marvel for ARO, but don't know of anyone to use it for filter oil. I have prolly 6 spare filters (inners and outers) for my buggy and my truggy. They get one club race or one days racing on them unless it is really dusty. Usually at RC Pro or other two day races I will change at the end of day. I've seen where clogged filters will really mess with a tune as well as filters that are not oiled up enough.

Cool JetMan, thanks for the input....I read the Marvel was good for filters as well....somewplace....but the gooey factor is certainly not there.

I do run two stage filters and clean the inners and outers after each days running.......but I will pick up some of the filter specific "gooey" oil today!!

This had me worried that I was killing my engine by using K&N oil for my filters so I got a new set of foams and decided to give it a good test. They are the stock foams, outer one comes dry and the innner has some blue oil on it rom the factory. Loaded them up and did some serious bashing over the weekend (new thread to come with pics of the carnage!!:)) while taking it apart I snapped these pics. You can see how dirty the outer filter is but the inner is pretty much spotless, save for the dirty thumb print.
For what its worth.......
