This is my neighbors roof; been this way for almost two months now.

He's got a standard swamp cooler setup. The one on the right is where the cooler would be, if it was on the roof. The one on the left, as you can see from the wires underneath it, well, that's covering the wire roof-jack. The hole for the water line is probably just a hole in the shingles.

You ought to see the back part of the roof, where he's added on. You can literally see a 2 inch drop in the shingles.

Kwalitee construkshun, if i ever did see it!

Duct tape would be the way to go!! Whats a swap cooler?

I didn't even think you could get a swamp cooler anymore. ACs are so cheap, why would someone want to run an antique like that?
.....................................................................
Swamp coolers pump water to the top of a feathery like grid, and as the water runs down it, a fan blows through it. It cools the air slightly by evaporation, but you also need to close the blinds to keep out sunlight. The temp will drop by a few degrees, but the humidity goes up. The water stagnates if you don't change it regularly, and the house breeds bacteria and smells like a swamp.
I saw on in a laundromat once, and the owner explained it to me. He thought it was great, but I had a hard time trying not to laugh about it.

Rolex nailed it. It's basically an evaporative cooling system. It has a tendency to make all paper within a 25 foot radius extremely dampened.

You can still get swamp coolers. This house has one on the garage, with a duct system... Sort of a hybrid swamp cooler/central AC unit.

You can get a sump-pump system that will pump out the water every 20 minutes or so.

Swamp coolers are very common here in the Fresno, Ca area, every home imprevement store sells them. I'm wondering what the purpose of those tires are, are they supposed to be holding his roof down? Here in Clovis/Fresno, you could call mosquito abatement and they would make him remove the tires.

They're to hold down the boards covering the holes where the cooler would ultimately be, instead of using a tarp and some duct tape to seal up the down-draft.

I don't care if he has tires on his roof... At least, until one comes skidding off and hits my truck. Then, I'll be ticked. Until then, it's just a redneck thing to have a laugh at.

Haha, no. He does, however, have the old one (rust and all) still on his front yard.

So I guess he's about to close it up.
When I was in Texas, I knew some people who would put ice cubes in the water tray to help cool things down from 115 degrees.
Small rental house, and no insulation in it since there was no winter cold to worry about.

Ice in the water tray... I'll have to keep that in mind, since there's also a freezer with ice maker in the garage.

I haven't looked lately, but I'm sure that isn't too far off. I know there's two refrigerators in the driveway, and a kitchen stove.

LMAO! I've passed over this thread for 3 days but my curiousity finally got the best of me.. sheesh.. it's freakin' 2007! time to upgrade!
