In some states, even some smaller crimes put you on the sex offender list, such as being convicted of indecent public exposure. A lot of surfers awhile back got tickets or arrested for changing from their wetsuits to their shorts under a towel. Other similar things like that. Also, think of those that were falsely accused and could not afford proper representation to avoid a conviction, for example ex-wife making a claim of assault or rape. Just an FYI.
Overall, though, the lists do have a positive for society. I wish they would be more specific as to the type of conviction, such as rapist or child molester. (Shouldn't the title "rapist" be a PART of child molester? In essence, that is what they are doing!)
