I have stripped 3 spur gears now. I'm afraid of getting a steel one because it is already a paint in the butt to fix the gear and i don't want to end up fixin tranny gears. The guy at my LHS said try the paper method but i didn't understand where he was going. I made sure my motor was as far over as it would go and as straight as the motor will go but I'm still stripping them. I do good for 10 minutes of slow driving not gassing it, but when i give it full throtle it sounds like eerrrrk clink, then i see the gear is stripped. So if anybody has any ideas on how to resolve this i would appreciate it. :)

here is how i adjust gear backlash. most receipts are .002 inch. dillions, k/mart ect. most copy paper is .004 inchs. set the gears so .002 paper comes out very wrinkled, but NOT torn. the .004 paper should tear in to. then if the gears run smooth you are good to go

Ok dude I've been down this frustrating road. Bottom Line is two words "Motor Mount". You hit the motor in (if you're like me) one of many spills you gave your truck. If you check the back two screws on the motor mount they ARE stripped. When you hit the motor you strip the back two screws.

Buy a new motor mount, put loctite on the screws that mount the engine to the mount. Tighten them fairly tight. Then Place a small strip of paper between the bell and the spur. Push the motor tight against the spur. (Be firm but don't push with all you have in your hands) With Loctite on the screws tighten them from the bottom and make sure the bell stays tight against the spur. I usually have a friend put in and tighten the bottom screws while I hold the engine firmly in place. (It can be a one man job but it's harder) Once it's all tight pull out the paper. If it tears the paper you're too tight!!!! If it comes out without tearing and leaves the tooth marks, wait overnight for the loctite to set and enjoy !!!!!!
