yes the 3 speed up grade will work in the ss i think. you may want to ask some one else thought I'm new to savages.
As far as I can remember the only way you can get the 3 speed is to buy the kit. The only reason I say the kit is because I have not seen the 3 speed offered with the Savage X tranny case. The X case is clearly different due to the fact it is accessed differently than the older savages. I have not looked recently since I do not have a Savage ( at the moment ) now.

You're correct Jon2; the pre-assembled 3 speed comes in the older "25" style trans case. However, it will fit the X trans case with zero effort. The kit is the better way to go; it will help you to learn how to work on the truck, and save you some cash in the process.
