hi guys, just want to get some differnt views on my problem. i have a revo 3.3 with a brand new engine in it (just finished running it in), i have adjusted the main carb screw a little and it goes very fast but i can't get it to shift in to 2nd? the revs are high and i have tried turning the grub screw anti-clockwise in the gearbox but still wont change??
any views or things to try would be appreciated. thanks

There are two grubs that are accessible through that opening.
The one in the center locks onto the shaft. The one that is off-set from center is the adjustment for the shift point. Make certain the center one is completely tight.

i have mate? i have marked it and and turned the shaft completly but there is only one?,

Unless things have changed in the trans, there has to be two.
Maybe the trans with the opti drive is different from the ones I'm used to.
Hang in there, someone will show up to help you out and then we'll both learn something.

Yeah the trans has always had a floating pin holding the 2nd gear primary. It's retained by one of the bearings. Revotalk if I were you I'd make absolute sure your engine is tuned 100%, then get the 2nd gear clutch anyway, you will need it eventually. Follow the instructions online and dissassemble/check/reassemble the trans. It's really quite simple and you might find other problems as well. First gear tends to wear out in about 5 gallons on them too. Does it have reverse?

thanks mate, yeah i will get the new anyway. i have tried it all day messing with that grub screw in the gearbox but its just not shifting at all? the car is running very quick, I've seen the video on the traxxas site on gear shifting and mine is reving alot higher than the one in the vid so I'm just gona have to take it out and have a look.

How's your slipper? Maybe tighten it up half a turn and see what it does.

If you have a slipper that's too loose, once the trans does hit second, the slipper just slips, so it seems like it's not shifting because of the power loss and high RPM's the engine kicks out when the slipper lets go.

I've had that happen a few times on various rigs.

hey, i have just taken my transmission apart and found a damaged little spring in the bottom of the gearbox its about 3mm, i have checked it out on the traxxas site and aparently it sits under the hex grub screw (shift adjuster screw) in the primary clutch, it says that if that screw is undone to much it comes out... the guy i bought it from must have turned it out to much.I'm now assuming when my new one arives my revo should change gear normally? has anyone experienced this before??

If the spring hasn't been mangled in the gears, you can replace it and keep that unit as a spare. It's the spring that determines how much centrifugal force (from the RPM) is needed to engage it. The tighter it is, the later it will shift.

That also means you may have a grub screw rolling around in there. Make sure you don't find a little grub screw in there because it will get caught up in your gears and mess them up. Besides being stripped, ruining gears is another job that grub screws are good for. ;)

I found a "lost" screw once...

Learn it from me. A screw that is lost, isn't always lost where you think it is. ;)

In my case, I thought it was in the trunk of my 1:1 car since that's where I took the trans apart at. I figured what the heck, grabbed another screw out of my spare parts bit and within a tank, the above happened. Nothing like a nice little present when you crack open a transmission!

that looks well bad mate!! as for my grub screw it was still in the clutch, so I'm asuming the guy i bought it from undone the grub too much not realising that the spring had come out and somehow managed to put the grub back in.... the spring is almost unrecognisable due to being mashed in the gears, so no damage has been done to them at all!

You really lucked out since he put the grub back in. That would have done some major damage in there.
Look on the bright side...no damage, and now you know how it works. ;)

Lucky for you the whole revo gearset can be had for about 20 bucks or less. Can't say the same for a savage 3-speed.......OUCH!
