I run 2 stage filters, & have never oiled the outer element. As you know, its the main element underneath that your worried about.. I let the outer element catch the big stuff... lol

id oil it. I've tried running it dry, and it just lets too much through. keep a lot of them on hand and keep them oiled in a ziplock baggy, when they get dirty changing them is easy. and it keeps the inner element cleaner. when the outters get dirty you can wash them out, but your inner really shouldnt be washed and reused, it should be replaced. so keeping the inner clean longer is easier on your wallet in the long run.

I only oil the inner on my truck,I leave the pre-filter dry.I just wash the outer filter after every race day,and the inner every other raceday.

I oil the outer, just because you usually don't have to clean the inner because the outer does a great job. And its just added protection. I think its worth the extra few cents for the oil to do the outer filter.

I don't oil the outer one as oiling causes my engine to run rich. I only oil the Inner foam with Associated Filter oil. I just have a few outer elements handy when I notice my outer one is clogged up.
