I had about 400 CD's, about 100 Tapes, 10-20 LPs, and a couple 8-tracks that all got stolen from my apartment about 8 years ago along with a ton of other electronics and small valuables.

So I started rebuilding the collection and got up to about 150 CDs again and had them in one of those thick travelling casses you keep in your car. About 5 years ago THAT got stolen out of my trunk, was the only thing missing.

After losing thousands of $$ worth of music I decided I would go 100% digital until the RIAA started cracking down. Now, I just listen to the radio.

Once upon a time I got a great deal on 10 Maxtor 250 One touch drives. I have one hooked to each of my computers and use retrospect to back to them up every day. I also have one that backs up all my backups every day as well. I then have an auto FTP that sends them to my web server. Can’t be too careful.

The lengths that people go to protect their porn. Nice setup Ed.

You know, Ed, I'm glad you started this thread because I went to continue my conversion and, low and behold, everything is screwed up! I'm sure it's something I did, but what is killing me is that my MP3 player is one of those Sony Network Walkmen (won it) and everything has to be converted to its format to work! I just wish I could find ONE application that will rip and allow me to synch selected tunes to my player!

Now, I pretty much have to start over, darn it! I'd try partioning my external drive, but I have other data there. I think I'll move everything over to my internal drive, partition, then try again!

ARRRGGGHHHH!

Also, ClintD, would you kindly break down that set-up you have? I'm not sure about the case part, do you purchase that outside of the drive or is that an all-in-one set-up? I like that!

You can get them either way. If you want to build one (Cheaper) its not hard. Get an external case choose a USB or firewire (Or one with both) and install a hard drive. i have seen 300 gig drives for as low as 99.00 and cases for 50-100.00.

I just ran across this little ditty.

Not only is it an EH but it has a poop load of extra USB and firewire ports. An EH and hub all in one.
Yes it is PC compatable.

I got a good deal on a few 400gig serial ATA hard drives. So I installed some in my computers and bought 2 external cases for the others.

as far as you're partition problem, try to find a program called Partition Magic. It can partition disks that still have data on them

Currently I have a collection of just over 9,000 songs of which consists of about 300+ ablums. As for organization I'm pretty anal about it. I hate having my MP3's without the right tags or incorrect tags and I'm very picky about the naming of my files.

Single mp3's are named as such: ARTIST - SONG TITLE.mp3

Albums are named as such: ARTIST - ALBUM - TRACK - SONG TITLE.mp3

I also use a program that's been a HUGE help in getting my mp3's organized and that's called Tag&Rename - you can dowload a trial of this program from www.softpointer.com Tag&Rename lets you rename all your files any way you want all at once, it will download the latest tags for the file including an image of the album cover (if possible). The really nice thing about this is if you have an iPod, the iPod will show you all the tag info plus a small thumbnail of the album cover. There's not much you can't do with this program when it comes to MP3s.

As for dupes I delete them as I get them unless it's from an album. For example BAND A comes out with a album with song X and then later comes out with a greatest hits album with song X on it again - i'll keep both.

Thank you WoodiE very much for the link. I used to do that manually with my older music and it would take me weeks.

Hey fellas, just went to OfficeMax for some printer paper and they have 160GB ATA internal drives (Western Digital) for $59.99, 200GB for $69.99 and 320GB for $99.99! Picked up a 200GB to reorganize my music and videos, going to try the Eddy partition method, see how that goes!

Also, big thanks to Woodie for the "Tag & Rename" link! Great application, just need to get it to quit assigning the track number as the artist name, but it pulled all my tunes together very quickly!

What is the warranty on these drives Monkey? I was at Best Buy last night and noticed similar prices on their WD drives but only had one year warranty. :(

Wow, some of you guys are nuts with your music. lol But thats cool. I get a CD, burn it to my computer and then throw it in a drawer somewhere. Oh yeah, I usually burn a disk for my truck too so I don't mess up the original. My collection is small as there are only a few peeps that I enjoy listening to enough to spend money on CD's or downloads.

Same, but you could buy extended plans from OfficeMax.
