Xmaxx max5 1650kv questions

So I just bought a new xmaxx and widekit, max5 1650kv, wfo mini mount and some other odds and end.. after installing I've noticed the gear cover had to be slightly shaved and I can't use the gear cover with some gears. ATM I have 54/18 and the cover doesn't fit. I also tried 46/18 but the adjustment bolts for the motor are hard to access. I'm looking for suggestions. Maybe someone has done this and has a better insight on it. I have a 23t and 24t gear coming and I'm going to try that . Is it safe to run the xmaxx without a gear cover? Does anyone have a good gear combo for this setup?

In my humble opinion I would check the engine pins are in the right place, so that the engine is positioned right. It looks like the cover fits without the engine in, right?

This motor mount does not use the traxxas pins for the mount.
