last week my conrod in my 3.3 split. i ordered the davis diesel conrodand a new pistion and sleeve. i put everything back together put a new glow plug in and tried to fire it up. i knew it would be a little hard to start it the first time and it was. i had to hold the throttle down so it would start. i set the carb back to factory settings and I'm still having trouble starting it. it does start but as soon as i let the off the throttle it shuts off. i turned the flywheel to check thecompression and it feels good. anyone out there have any suggestions?
 
Make sure you didn't put the slevee in wrong.Otherwise it sounds like your low speed needle needs to be richend up also make sure when you close the throttle you have about a 1mm opening on the slide.:D

This is just my mind going through a few things that might be causing your problem not nessiarly in the correct order but some things you may want to check.

thanks for the input bill! i took it to my LHS and I've been getting to knoe the mechanic there. i ask him questions that i have and he usually gives me good advice. well he took a look at it and adjusted the needles. we took it out back to the track and started it up. he made a funny face and said "that sounded weird" he suggested i might have the piston backwards and sure enough it was. i turned it around and its it broke in and its running assume!
 
Glad to read that you got it all figured out, I know these things can be frustrating at times yet so simply overlooked stuff can be fixed with ease...

I didn't even think about the piston sometimes its hard to hear it run on the forum glad you got it going now go have some fun.:D Always a good idea to match mark your parts if your not sure it'll avoid a problem like that from happening.
