I'm looking for a little help, I'm getting rid o my old linkyses router for a wireless one. Now my question is when i buy the wireless one like a g-band router does all of my adaptors have to be g-band as well. I am pretty sure they do but just wanted to ask, also if you have any suggestions about brand or setup that would be appreciated. I will be running a notebook, desktop, and 2 playstations, thanks.
 
i really like the linksys wireless A + G router...you can use it with both A & G cards (although if thiers any A band card on the network all the cards even the G band ones will run at A band speed)..... the instructions are great & they have a really good website with a lot of help for seting up networks of all kinds
 
The G is backwards compatible with the A and B but to take full advantage of the speed increase offered by the G you will need G cards.
 
so would it be to my advantage to just get a g router with all g adaptors or actually go with the a+g eventhough i will probable never have an a adaptor. which is faster? also does anyone use the linksyes usb adaptor with their desktop. I know i will need a card for the notebook and the gaming adaptor for the ps2 but what do you suggest for the pc. thanks again guys this is a big help.
 
Wireless is over rated unless you truly have to have it. Hardwire is always better and more stable. When you start to look at wireless speeds for internet connectivity anything over B is wasted. Even with DSL or cable access the B routers exceed any speed you are likely to get. If you are transferring HUGE chunks of data from computer to computer or have a T1 or greater that’s a different story.

Most of the newer routers are backwards compatible as mentioned above.
 
it is eather stay with my hardwire and buy another cable modem or just go wireless and then i will not have to run a cord to my living room like i do now. We have a computer upstairs and downstairs, and all this is for is internet access and gaming. I have no need to transfer or communicate between the two computers.
 
If the cord is already run, it’s a no brainer... Use it!
If you have a laptop or are unable to run a line its better then nothing. Again hard wired is best.
 
I am using a D-Link DGL-4300 wireless. It's sole purpose is to let my 360 access Xbox Live which it does without any problems. If you go wireless, be sure to secure your network. The people next door did not, and at first the 360 automatically accessed their network.
 
I use the linksys wireless G router. I was using it connect everything through wireless. When I had fios installed, I had them run the lan drop to where my PC was setup. Now I only use the wireless for my Tivo's and work laptop. I like to use the wireless access with the laptop when I work from home, it allows me to work out on my patio durring the nice days of spring and summer.
 
To be honest, you will not see any difference in speed where the internet is concerned with any router regardless of brand.

The only difference between the g and the b is the networking capabilities not having to do with the internet at all. The only place where you would see a difference here is sharing files wirelessly.
 
thanks guys i plan to use hard wireing with my desktop to my router then my ps2's and notebook wireless. i think for me that will work the best, thanks for all the help.
 
Most routers are backwards compatible.. I really dont like wireless, but i am pretty much forced to use it otherwise I would have along ugly wire going down the stairs and everything. My computer is wireless in my room, but its slow so I usually am just on a wired one.
 
Yeah don't forget to change the user and password on the linksys if you get it. I have a neighbor that still hasn't figured his out. It's still the default and I get on there every couple of weeks and mess up his connection to the point where I know he has to do a hard reset!
 
I just set up my Wireless network here at home. I have a dedicated PC for the server so I can go about the different PC's if I wish. If you are on the go and can't stay in one spot then wireless is the way to go. If you sit in one room and just want the conveneince of the wireless connection then it may not be. I am all over the house..even on the crapper with it. So long as it is not in bed with me I am ok.

I use all the security keys and I do not broadcast my network name so I don't have any freeloaders. each PC or Laptop has a designated IP that I assign and can't be changed by the user, only the admin..me. I know there are hackers out there so I have a try to keep up with them and send them a little something from my server if they try and log onto my network/server without me knowing.Granted there is NO perfect network so I maintain it the best I can everyday.
