Hey Guys Hows It Going, I Just Got A Quick Question, I'm Looking At Putting A Computor In My Shop And I Dont Want to Dig A Trench To Lay Cable In I'm Wondering If There Is A Wireless Network I Could Install Instead Any Suggestions Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

Do you have broadband? Get a wireless router. 802.11g is the current technology. 54mbps compared to 802.11b's 11mbps.

Get a wireless ethernet card for the pc/laptop and configure it. You'll have to enable and configure the wireless communication from the router. It's off by default.

Distance between the router and the wireless pc/laptop is a consideration too. Bitrates fall proportionately as distance increases.

I am running a D link DI-704P Router and a Wireless card for my Laptop Dlink DWL-G650 it is 802.11G and is super fast. Love it cost me about $120 after rebates when I bought it.

So What Is Distance Like On These Systems I Might Have To Go Through A Couple Of Wall For Signal.

Well my router is upstairs and I roam all over the house with mine. Garage drive way out back everywhere and I get a pretty damn good signal no matter where I am. There is a variable bitrate that you can select meaning like auto so it will configure to be the fastest it can at all times. It will work with conventional802.11b products too.

802.11b is what I use, and I use it for my wireless internet I use a cisco card in my computer, and they use a cisco cces point on the ridge.

My wireless network reaches 11 miles at stock power. I do have an extrernal antenna.

What I am saying is that you should have no problems getting signal. If you do, all you have to do is buy an antenna.

Almost any wireles router/wireless pc card combo will do you just fine.

Works like a champ. I'm ashamed to say I went with that model just in case I wanted a wireless connection. Still don't need the wireless... but it's there if I need it.

Holy Crap After Reading that I Almost Want to Dig A trench to lay down some cable, either way i look at it I'm going to be doing some work. Thanx Msly

Get your connection working and turn off the SSID broadcast.

(I didn't read msly's link... did it say that?)

We don't have broadband out here(supposedly) so when I put my antenna up to get high speed internet I offered to share my broad band (11megabit)

I had two friends across the road, and one next door.

What we did (none wanted to pay for another wireless router)

Was dig a 4 inch deep trench, and the width of a claw hammer. We bought some heavy duty garden hose, and ran all the network cable through that to my two neighbors.

When it came to the guys across the street, we had a crack in the asphalt. We used a sprayer nozzle on the end of the hose, and blew all the dirt out of the crack in the pavement. We then laid the two cables at the bottom of the crack, and filled it with portland cement.

What I am getting at is you can use normal garden hose for conduit, and lay it in a very small trench.

These cables will still send traffic :D

my link is just explaining WEP.... here is a better link for just general wireless security measures.

I have been running a wireless network for well over a year without an issue.

WEP is nice but its not fool proof. It has been hacked. They are currently working on a new standard. I can't think of the name at this moment.

I have ran WEP before and I didn't care for all of the hassles that come with it. It also slowed the connection down.

For my wireless at home the first thing I do is change the admin password. You would be surpised to know how many people keep the default passowrd. The next thing I do is I turn off SSID broadcasting. Along with that make sure you change the name of the AP. If you do these 3 simple things you should be just fine. I also run MAC filtering. That works if you have 5 machines or less. Any more and that could be a PITA.

So Now I'm Thinking I Could Handle Digging A Small Trench To Get This Done, I Was Thinking Of Using 1/2" PVC Pipe To Feed The Cable Through What Do You Guys Think I Really Only Need To Go About 30' To Get Access To The Shop. So I Can Go And Get A Regular Router And About 50' Of Cable Right. Thanx For All The Input Guys I Was Having A Tough Time With This Endeavor.

To tell you the truth, either way is going to be easy and secure.

Don't let wireless intimidate you. I only went with garden hose for conduit, and all that because the neighbors were tight and didn't want to buy wireless cards.

The ups of wirless.
#1 you can move the computer anywhere.
#2 you can get wireless internet at starbucks/etc.
#3 can hook up to a friends network.
#4 your friends can have internet on their laptop at your house.
#5 no diggin, no wires

The ups of hardwired
#1 about $50 cheaper

I was trying to think of the upside of being hardwired, and I really can't really find any major benifiets.

Wireless is easy to set up and secure it also only takes a few minutes.

I think you could probably get setup for under $150 maybe $25 more than a hardwired setup to tell you the truth.

Thanx Everyone For All The Useful Information Undecided Yet As To Which To Go With But I'm A lot Better Off Then When I First Posted This Question.Thanx Again.

Another "up" about hardwired is a 100mbps connection to your local network. Installs or file transfers from local network resources will run a heckuva lot faster over cat5. If you'll just be surfing the net or checking email the wireless won't be your bottleneck.

I really like Lykan's garden hose idea. No pvc to glue. Maybe squirt some silicone sealant in the hose terminations. I'd do that and wire the cable to cat5 jacks in the shop and the house.

Yes WEP is crackable but you need to be sniffing the wireless network for a very long time to be able to crack it. I doubt anyone will be doing that to someones home. They might do it outside a bank...If you change your WEP passphrase every month or so it would be a real hassle then.
