how long is it ok to wind out the rpm? I know on my 2 stroke dirt bike that you dont want to run it wide open for too long... just short bursts... is it the same for these little 2 strokes? I've been running it with like 3-5 second wide bursts then letting off but whats the general rule for the throttle wide open to avoid damage? I learned the hard way on the dirt bike ( yrs ago) when i burned a hole in the top of the piston.

depends on the engine really. most engines can handle it pretty well. (unless its a 3.3 traxxas) most likely the power band drops off around 35k RPM and have a free spin RPM of around 45k.

with exception of the 3.3trx, the only time I've seen an engine let go completely was was during a high speed WOT run away. and believe it or not most quality nitro engines top speed is limited by either the carb or crank porting. Generally most (quality) engine makers engineer there engines to hold together under an apropriate load for extended periods.

Not sure if the link will work, but I counted close to 10 sec.

As long as it's tuned well and has airflow it doesn't matter how long you do it. Unless you're chasing in a car or doing big circles you'll just go out of range anyway. The thing to avoid is over-working the engine, tall grass, too many donuts, oversize tires etc.

He's right i fly planes and run boats trust me they are run wide open for a good lenght of time unless your tune is wrong or the engine is a piece of crap don't worry about it.It's never recomened to open it up with no load on it you will over rev and blow it.Get out there punch it and enjoy!:D

If you burn a piston you are to lean .:whhooo:

i dont know the internals of the 3.3 revo.... but the 125 cc and the 250 cc jap dirtbikes i used to run were all aluminum.... when running at high rpm... for long periods... were so hot it would burn a hole in the top of the piston.... i let a friend ride my bike and he ran down a long dirt road wide open... the heat burned a hole through the top of the piston.... i see the video and see that it can run wide open for long periods... I'm new to the rc nitro trucks... I'm not so sure about the temps.... due to the reeds.... i think it was more the alloys used and the heat involved.... i dont know the internals of the 3.3

They're way different from any dirt bike. As long as it's tuned properly and up to temp it'll be fine.

One accessory that is almost a must have for RC is a non-contact thermometer. It will help keep track of temps so you won't have the engine burn up. A Traxxas 3.3 will run best usually between 250-270* F.
