This is kind of cool.

Mike (mSly) told me about this thing called Windows Media Encoder. Apparently you can create wmv files from of it. I think this might be integrated into Windows XP, but I'm not 100% sure because I'm not a fan of bloatware (XP).

Anyway, you can make a video from you desktop.

I made this in like 5 minutes:

lame video (blah.wmv)

Oh yeah it's free from MicroSloft.

it would help if the encoder was available without downloading that program. I'm running XP and WMP said that the codec wasn't available, and no option to go find it. Oh well.

rob - the other problem for that coder is with security at alot of our jobs. for some reason that coder wont work when u have your computer security settings set at High.

Especially when u work for the Post office. I can't even see the vids and some certain pics. I usually have to wait to get home. :nono:

cool video (cool.wmv)

Say your prayers little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone

Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
Till the sandman he comes

add a little audio and anything is cool... :x

any ideas how to convert wmv to an mpeg or something?

The Cool thing about the encoder is...using it to push and pull video from a windows 2000 server. You can use it for video on demand. We are digitizing the entire library of video tapes and putting it up on the server. If I person needs to watch a particular video they just need to click the link and the server will send it out.

I have also used it to stream live broadcasts over all the computers in the building. you can unicast, multicast, many streams at a time. The better server you are using the better off you are.

The good and bad thing about the windows media services is that it is free, the bad thing for company's like cisco that are charging about 30-40 grand for the same solution called IPTV.

If you wanted to server out small amounts of streams from your home computer you could do it with just the encoder. If you want to do it for real you would have to use it in conjunction with the windows media services option in the new windows server.

Not sure if any of this made any sense LOL

i understood. i could see how a library or a school could make good use of it... " Mrs Smith, Billy's looking at the Sex Ed videos again!" "Billy, get your hand out of your pants!"

Are you guys talking about the WMV format, as opposed to avi mov mpg etc? Cause if you are, that's what all my videos are. The host I use supports streaming media (wmv is in that category), but Rob must be using a different codec, or new one or something. Even though the files are in wmv format, they were compressed with a different codec that NA and I don't have, cause it aint workin for us.

Rob, I don't think you can convert a wmv to mpg. I just tried importing a wmv to adobe premiere and studio 8 and both programs will not let me import a wmv file. It might be some kind of copyright protection thing with that kind of file format. There may be some program on the net that does convert it, but I don't know of one off hand.

**Update** I just tried both videos on this machine, not my laptop I used eariler, and the first one made WMP download the codec, the second played fine. This is the machine I use to do videos, so it's loaded with codecs. The laptop was on the company LAN and I think there are some filters on the router.

error - u are right on about the filters i presume. my LAN system tries to download the new codec that RobH is using, but then fails to to system security barriers.

MSLY, CHRISTIAN! Please dont compress like this for the bash video! lol.

Yeah, don't use some F'd up new microshaft codec that noone has. Use the standard "comes with windows" wmv format for online dist.

I belive all you need is windows media 9 to make it work.

oh God, don't get me off on flaming that POS. MP9 is crap. Talk about digital rights management, crap, you can't play half your bought CD's on it. STAY AWAY FROM MP9!!! I load new systems for an OEM, and that's 1 of a few updates we avoid like the plague. Also, don't load the .NET framework update, it'll make your system run like crap (very slow).

No Need to flame. We all know Microsoft has its problems to say the least LOL

I have it running on 600+ computers without and issue, but they are not allowed to play personal CD's so that is not much of an issue. Its just used to play WMV files.

Where can I get this? Or download it?
I'm not really technical when it comes to computers so I wont bother checking if it works, I wanted to know where to get it. I'm going to make a cool movie:shhh:

SHK, don't go towards the dark side.

Sly, most of our clients are schools, and you talk about pissy clients, dang, some of them still want to run programs meant for win 95 on new XP machines. And God forbid they have have any little idiosychsies (like not playing retail CDs).

Get this, one of our clients pitched a B when he couldn't activate some of his XP machines. Want to know why it wouldn't hook up with redmend. The guy doesn't have any DHCP servers on his system, all static IPs running thru some POS obsolete gateway. Yeah, he carries around a book with every machine and it's assigned IP. That's fine, outdated, and quaint, but if the 30 days runs out you gotta activate it and you can't static number the IP. I was on the phone with the guy and told him to get a $50 router with a DHCP server built in, park a segment behind it and activate the friggin machines. He said it was too much (microsoft speak) administrative effort and he wanted us to fix it. So my boss sends me 4.5 hours across the state (1 way) to pick the friggin machines up, return them to our office, activate them and then return them. What a friggin circus. Anyone looking for a really good tech, I'm in the market. Damn, sorry for the rant.

I am on-site admin/tech support for a huge school on long island. I have over 1800 users and 600+ computers including 150 wireless computers. yea computer users in school districts can be the biggest baby's

We have a microsoft site license which is cool, I can load any microsoft product without having to activate it.

I'm the man in charge so to speak so things are cool, but yes dealing with the staff can be interesting to say the least LOL

hey msly - imbroken just posted a small vid with the same codec that was mentioned in this thread, alot of us on LANS cannot open it. any ideas for rectification?

What else can I say, but I live in the communistwealth of VA. That activation crap is the biggest thorn in my butt. VLP is the shiznit, but my boss says OEM is cheaper and all the stuff in VA is on bid, and everyone knows what that means. It means my butt is the one typing in those 25 digit long numbers to make everyone happy. There was a streatch where the activation servers were'nt activating, and I had to call MS to activate about 30 laptops. That sucked. I was on the phone for about an hour and a half reading numbers to this hottie at MS, and she would read off numbers to me. I almost fell in love, God she turned me on reading all those numbers.

NA, last post, time to fire up the flame throwers :flamer:

Here's the codec pack. It works on the stock MP in XP
