I'm not having very good luck with the spray on window tinting. I'm using Pactra Racing Finish window tint in a rattle can. Any tips?
I've done the fender flares with spray Plasti-dip, (not in this pic) and I'm about to do a vinyl roof the same way. I thought a tinted moon roof would be a nice touch.

First thing you need to do is take the rattle can tint outside, then throw it as far as you possibly can! That stuff is total crap! Then go to the lhs or get on line and buy yourself some Spaz stix window tint. You will need an airbrush though to use it. The stuff is amazing, especially compared to that crap in a can. Spray very very very light coats until you achieve the desired darkness of the tint.

Now when should I expect my vacation voucher? :D

I was hoping the reply would be from our Painting Guru.
Amazing...This is a useful post, and not your usual spam.

Okay, you win.
Three (3) THREE weeks in the Riviera!!!

Someone from Sweden (Neobart ?) won this prize a couple of months ago, but hasn't claimed it yet. That's why you get the extra week.

It's an '84 Buick Riviera, partially submerged in a stream behind the Super Wall-Mart in East Knoxville.
You might have to remove the rusty shopping cart from Sam's Club to get to the only door that opens.

Thanks for the useful post, and the EXCELLENT reply. Fortunately I'm on the 6th floor here, so I'm sure I can get some great distance with this rattle can.

I'll take a week off your time in the Riviera if you can give me a link to the Spaz tint.

Here you go, you do know theres this real cool search engine called google? :D

Google sounds familiar. I think I used it once and found this site. That's why I don't use it any more.

Anyway, I just thought you'd have a preferred site to get it, and at the same time give you credit for another good post.
Congrats. You're now down to only 2 weeks in the Riviera.

Good looking stuff. I have used Pactra Transparent Smoke color and that gives a decent effect, too. But the SS stuff looks like the right stuff...

It definitely is Jeff, I have tried the transparent smoke, pactra tint (absolute crap!) but the SS tint is awesome! Looks real, sprays real nice, I'll never use anything else to tint windows again.

Candyman, a while back I asked about one of the lids you posted and you said you used the Spaz Stix for the chrome. Well, I ordered some of that too, along with some color, some backing and some prep.
I have an order on the way from Tower.
The problem with what I tried might not be the coating itself, but trying to get a consistent coat through a 3 cent nozzle. I kept getting spit drops on the lexan. Fortunately it cleans off completely with DA.

I had a similar problem using the tint until I put a dehumidifier in the airline. The other thing is that you're not using enough air in the brush.

When my order arrives I'll be using the air brush.
The problem I ran into here is using Pactra in a rattle can. My LHS doesn't carry anything else for window tint, so I went for it.

The airbrush will take some getting used to, Rolex. Once you learn how to use it, you'll love it. One way to practice is to use empty 2-liter soda bottles (preferably clear). Cut them open and paint away. It's the way I learned to use my airbrush.

i've used the Pactra Trans Smoke as well and have had nice results. Since an airbrush would be used the spray pattern is much smaller than with a rattle can, therefor it is extremely important to use the largest needle, cone, and/or tip combination you have. This however creates larger droplets so you need to crank up the pressure so the paint atomizes smaller. You don't want your windows to look streaky so you want your spray pattern to be able to blend. You also want to keep your spray distance back much further than normal.

I've used airbrushes for years. Paasche is my #1, and I have a couple of Badgers for basic spraying.
Needless to say, I done a LOT of spraying through the years, even cars.
My Tower order arrives on the 27th, and my spray equipment is ready and waiting.
I just ran into a problem here because I could NOT get tint that I could use in the airbrush.

Your LHS doesn't carry the Pactra stuff? Hmm.. that's a pretty standard item on the paint rack.

Yes it does, and that's the problem. That's the ONLY window tint they stock. It tends to spit drops through a 3 cent nozzle. I'm waiting on the Spaz to arrive so I can airbrush it.

i never tried that spray tint but i used some real tint from my truck and it worked great just a little window cleaner and lay it on and wipe it down and you have really nice looking windows. The other cool thing is you can get it in different colors to match your paint sceme. Hope this helps
Thanx John

I had to replace a window on my limo several years ago, and bought a roll of that tint film to match the rest of the windows. I know I still have a good sized swatch of it somewhere, but what I have would be too dark.
I can't believe I never thought of trying that. It's available in several shades of gray and blue in most auto stores.
THANKS SO MUCH for that tip SuperMaxx83 !!!

I was actually referring to the airbrush bottle. My LHS carries Pactra Transparant Smoke in bottle for airbrushing. I've had good results with it.

i have like 3 different colors of tint RED, BLUE,GREEN and i am going to get yellow next week. Its kinda pricey if you use it just for tinting your rc windows but it looks really cool and i think it looks better then using paint.
Thanx Again guys

No one there mentioned it, and this is the first time I've tinted windows. My paint order gets here via UPS tomorrow and I'm looking forward to getting the job done right.

I still might try this on another project that ALL the windows will be tinted on.
It's not pricey as long as the end result is good.
