I need to calk around my windows this year before winter comes.
I was wondering if I need to remove the old calking first. The old calking isn't dried up that bad but the house has settled in over the years and there are some gaps.

Just looking for some input on this subject.
 
YES you lazy old fart.....you have to do the job right the first time or it will be a mess putting on the new and it will not last as long...;)

Now get out there and start scraping.....small putty knife works best.

Report back here when you are finished..... and post a pic for our inspection and approval.

Change of plans... Bring a putty knife instead. :D
 
If you want to do it again next year then don't scrape the old stuff off. This is known as the half ass method.

If you want it to last you will need to scrape the old stuff out.

I have found that cutting along the edge of the caulk line with a utility knife then pulling the old caulk out with needle nose pliers works best.
 
Fast eddy,I dont know how the paint is on the house but a ton of people here in my neiborhood have used a guy called poccos painting they wash the house pound in all the nails recalk and paint in like two days at a very very fair price.hit me up if you need his number...
 
Just had the house painted 2 years ago but thanks.
I went and checked all the windows and only the ones on the south side of the house are in need. It wont be to bad. A few hours of work and it will be history. There are only 6 windows that need to be re-caulked and 4 of them are on the ground level. I have a few trim boards I want to replace as long as I'm in house repair mode.

I'm sure that after I get done with the hospital bills I would have been better off having someone else do it. But I think Ill try this one on my own.
 
You can get silicone caulks that will last for 50 years. Whatever you get, make sure it's a quality caulk, and labled 'Paintable".

That is for sure.....I recently spent three days and $75 doing a water pump on my car......just to spend $200 to get the mechanic to repair my mess.

Sometimes it is better to pay the pro.

BTW if I had a few days to spare I would drive down there and help....as long you did not go cheap on the beer afterwards.... :spit:
 
If you want a super smooth caulk joint, spray some DA on to the caulk after you have worked it into place and smooth it with your finger.

Great tip... I will have to use that one. I stink at getting a caulk joint to look nice and neat.
 
How am I supposed to drink beer and flip steaks on the BBQ if my finger is stuck to the side of my window.

Cool, we get to drink all of Eddy's beer while he's stuck to the window!
 
Lot of people cut the tip too far back on the caulk tube. Got a big hole, so it's coming out pretty wide to start with. Just end up with a mess.
Want a small hole 1/4" or smaller? And hold the tip against the window frame as you pump the gun.
Cut the tip at an angle. That is how you are going to hold the gun.

Could be worse....


I remember a few years back it was drinking beer, flipping steaks, and trying to kill yellow jackets.

Don't figure ya spilled a drop of beer or lost a steak in the fire.
That takes coordination. :LoL:
