To give some background my T-Maxx is a first gen 1.5. It is on at least its third engine, second tranny and second set of drive ends. I bought it used and have run over 6 gallons of fuel through it. I know that it is just a backyard fun truck so I do not want to dump thousands into it. Just want to give it some new life and make it a good dependable truck again.
I am switching it over to an extended 3.3 chassis, doing a FOC to the tranny, have already installed the 2.5 engine, will be putting aluminum wheel hexes in and steel center cvd's in.
What brought about the rebuild was a combination of things. The firs was where the chassis bolts to the rear bulkhead kept coming loose, the it would tear up the left rear wheel hex at about half a tank fairly often, the tranny likes to get stuck in second gear, it stripped the spur gear and broke both chassis braces. When I got down to just the bare bones chassis I found it to be twisted, and the rear bulkhead mounting holes were elongated.
My daughter loves watching this truck run and cheers it on all the time, which is the main reason for doing a complete rebuild instead of buying another truck and using this one for parts.
After the tear down this is what is good, and bad. I have a new chassis, the tranny had some hard black chunks in it; presumably from the second gear clutch, the 2.5 is still good, have a new spur gear, have new bulkheads and chassis braces, the diffs can be rebuilt and put back in service, both front knuckles are cracked, have new ones, body mounts are shot, shock towers are ok (could use to replace the rear) tires are shot, rims are ok at best, bearings will be replaces (most sound like they are grinding sand when the spin).
Overall I do have a lot I can save and a lot I cannot. My kids are very involved in this so it will be slow going as I will explain everything to them as I go, it also means no late nights working on it either. In the end my kids will have learned a bit more about the RC's and we will have brought new life to Willie (my daughter named it). Once I find my camera I will post some pics. Shaun
