Ok, so I have some super wide tires and rims on the 4.6, and I just noticed tonight during a servo upgrade that at full turn I am rubbing bad. I want to widen the stance and have read that I can do this using the XL parts. I looked into it deeply on google and am unable to get a clear answer. I am seeing the following and have listed possible problems.
-need to use the savage XL control arms. (problem, all the ones that I look at say they are compatible with the X and XL so how is there a size difference?)
-I need to use the longer dogbones (looks like they are thicker so I need to use the XL cups as well, is this on both ends or just the diff end? Do I have to change the diff too?)
-Then there is the steering bar, the one that looks like it can be adjusted from the middle? do I need to upgrade this as well?

Bottom line, is that I really would like to do some kind of a spacer on the wheels, but I'm not sure that that is possible. I have looked into this a ton, and can't seem to find a definite conversion that explains it well. I think need to make sure that the arms on the XL ARE in fact different in length. All the places that I have looked show that the arms and bones are capable with the X and Xl.. Please let me know if you can help, or at least direct me to a thread where someone has completed this or how to place spacers in.

The arms are the same length, the drive shafts (dogbones) I think are the same length but thicker (not 100% sure on this though). The diff shaft (cups) you're going to need as well so you can fit the drive shafts in them. You're obviously going to need the xl hd wide axle, but you don't need new diffs. Steering bar I really don't know because I'm not sure what you mean by this, Turnbuckles, steering post, steering crank post? All seem to work with both the X and XL though.

Also all Savages have 2 diffs, so both ends are diff ends, so for the drive shafts, diff shafts, and axles you're going to need to sets.

I hope this helps, and maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, as I still consider myself a newb. As well this post has made me question a winter, well actually it's turning into a spring Savage flux project I'm still acquiring parts for. So I'll probably be posting up some questions tomorrow if I can't figure it out myself tonight.

I widened a savage by adding FLM extended a-arm kit. I don't like to use hub spacers, they put too much strain on the wheel bearings.......but wheel bearing are fairly cheap/inexpensive.
Proline also make wheels with offsets.

Agreed. Stick to extended arms, not hub extenders.

Where can I find the extended a-arm kit? I looked in ebay but the search was not clear and no results could be found. Do I need anything else but the A-arms?

in order to convert to XL/flux drivetrain you WILL NEED to change out the Differential drivecups from an XL/FLUX, the 4 shafts from an XL/FLUX, and you will also need the 4 extended axles from the XL. The Xl and flux uses 11mm shaftballs over the X's 8MM shaft balls. its probably 6 of one and a half a dozen on the price VS the FLM extended arms($150) the XL parts could be bought fairly cheaply on ebay from JRC if you are willing to wait out the auctions! it never hurts to have diff parts, so go ahead and just get a set of XL/flux diffs with the bigger cups already installed. they can be had for cheap on auction!

IMHO i like the XL setup way better all my X's are converted. most RC gurus will tell you to stay away from aluminum arms because they BEND. and once they are bent, they are useless!(nothing against FLM, i have a shelf-queen made of FLM) what are you going to hit that tree in the yard with first? hmmmm probably one of the front tires!

Buying the complete diffs from one of the eBay chop shops is actually a really good idea, always good to have extra diffs on hand.

I'm converting mine from a Savage Flux to Savage Flux XL, so all I needed was the extended axles and the tvp's.

well, if he buys the FLM arms, he is going to need the XL or flux axles and the XL/flux cups anyway, to work with the flm shafts, so be cheaper to just get the xl/flux shafts and save a bit on the pocketbook

FLM has a lifetime warranty. FLM also makes their wheel axles (dogbones) to fit 9mm ball ends, so you can still use the hellfire hex conversion. You just have to make sure you order the proper extended a-arms set.

FLM has lifetime warranty on their driveshafts, not on the rest of their stuff! those badboys arent meant for bashing. you will eat up differentail carriers everytime you crash wheel first into something. something has to give, and its going to be the plastic differential carriers/bulkheads. Big bucks to convert to FLM hybrid diffs also, and probably cash the guy dont want to spend

Sounds like a lot of work and money. I think I'll just let them rub. I don't understand exactly and she still runs good..

So with these three things, I DO NOT need to get the wider A-Arms? The diff cups will do the actual "widening of the wheelbase? Can I just widen the front axle?

there IS NO difference between the XL, flux, or X suspension arms. XL get its wideness from thos axles and spacers that come with them. why just do the front? it will be 1/2" wider on each side. you will get a full set of axles anyway, so why not do the whole truck?
when you buy the axles, get the ones with the XL center shaft included, its longer. that way at a later date you can get some xl frameplates if you choose and can have an XL!
