in a dictionary a mill is known as "A building or collection of buildings that has machinery for manufacture; a factory" a factory produces stuff and well then engine produces the power for the car thus giving the engine a name in slang which is know as the mill

Hmm I have used that only recently since some refer to them as that as well. I followed suit. THe Term Mill has been around for quite some time. For example: Cotton Mill.

I have always called hi performace engines "mills". Good question as to why.

I call it a mill because the process by which they are made.

They are milled typically in a CNC or machine shop.

Just stuck with me.

All Hi-Po engines have been called a mill since the days of a 85 hp Flattie. My 80 year old dad can attest to this.

I think your correct.....We've always called any engine block that we where working from a "Mill" and I always heard the term for Nitro "blocks" and it stuck me me too.

When you guys actually talk to other people do you say mill? Cuz I tried saying it out loud and it just doesn't seem right. I can right and type mill and it seems to make sense, but I think Ill just stick with engine.

Thanks for the info!

I think they are called mills because people would get their heads milled down to increase compression. Nowadays you just buy a high compression engine.

is that what it is? Cuz I never heard ne1 call an engine a mill before in my life. If its a redneck term, that completely explains it. I have been in the auto industry for close to 6 years now and never heard ne1 call an engine a mill. Even when I went down to texas for a few races, never once heard ne1 say mill.

From the time I started call them mills people seem to take notice of the word and think I know more than they do plus it sounds cool. I'm hoping people will think I'm a "Guru" and help me overcome my self image issues.

How about we call them money pits..wait those are women. I 'll stick to mill

How about your wife is going to wreck your pecker if you spend more money on your mill???

RLMAO!:hump:

By the way, I was referring to 1:1 engines. I think the word mill when used in reference to engines started back in the 1940's. Sorry FastEddy I think it just carried over from automotive buffs.

Me leaning against the back of my new truck --"Yeah I had a 67' dodge with a 318"

Old timer-- (kicks the tires, adjusts his hat as he spits in the gravel) "I remember those, damned good mills.... used to put 'em in cop cars when I was a kid"

Heard it used in that type of a conversation since I was a old enough to want a car of my own.
