I believe he was stationed in Japan, but about to transfer stateside.

I can't comment much from a personal standpoint. At the time of stop loss, i had already signed voluntary indef. What i've seen from others has been minimal impact on their lives...ie, extended to finish deployment, not allowed to change station till after upcoming deployments and so on. I shouldn't have to say it, but what you see on tv is generally the exception, not the rule. I am not saying what you saw did not happen to some individuals, just saying that's not how it goes for most.
