Fantom .28(assembled from precission japenese parts) or a 24.7 ?
I spoke with the guy from Fantom today for about 30M's, I was very impressed with his knowledge and proffesionalism. It appears that there is a tremendous differance how motors are made and their components. Everyone I've talked with so far recommended the Fantom as a good, reliable and powerfull motor.
I've heard that the 24.7 motor is suppossed to be very good too, but either too pricey or hard to come by.
Any recommendations?

If you are not set on either of those motors, I hear (and purchased) the SH .28 is awesome (they make the Mach and XTM motors).
Fantom motors in general are good, so I'd go with the biger motor.

There is a Wasp .28, Diablo .28, and the Fantom .27, which are all very similar engines. I own a Wasp .28 and a XTM 24.7 and the Wasp is on a different level of power. The Wasp is much more powerful and is capable of reaching much higher RPMs, 42,800, which will give you a higher top speed.

For pricing the Wasp/Fantom is around 170 ish and the 24.7 is 130 ish. If you got the extra 40$ it is most definetely worth it. Wheelies are easy with stock gearing. I run 14/49 which I plan on changing soon cause I can't keep the wheels on the ground.

Both engines, though, are a good increase in performance over stock.

I too would recommend the Wasp .28. She is a bad a@# engine and will definitely give you the power when you drop the hammer. Has tons of low-end torque and can scream on the RPM's.

Tower has it for $170 and then you can use the $25 coupon code (010EM) to drop the price down to $145. I definitely know that you can't find a better engine for that price.

I agree. Get the Wasp .28. I did a bunch of research on replacement mills for my Savage and was going to pick-up the Wasp.

I was doing research and it seemed to appear that, while the Wasp is less in cost,it is alleged that it isn't built to last as long as the Fantoms(japanese made) or Sirio/ Rossi (Italian made). I'm not sure of this, but I was told that some of the cheaper ones are made in Asia and are not built very well, compared to the Japanese or Italian motors.
I'm interested to hear what you think.

I too have the WASP .28 and love it. Big time power everywhere, big improvement over the S-25. Check out all the threads on the WASP .28 and you'll find lots of praise for it.

The WASP .28 is also made in Japan.

I will agree w/ you on this point. I have a Sirio .12 on my touring car and I can tell a difference b/t the quality of parts on the Sirio (italian) vs my Wasp (Japan). However, when I drop the hammer on the Savage, I forget all about the fact that she came from Japan.

There are some good products and some poor products that come out of Japan. The stock HPI S-25 engine probably comes from Japan, and I would rate her as a really good engine.

I think the main thing that will determine you engine life is:
---How you drive her (high temps...low oil content...etc)
---How you maintain her (cleaning after each run...keeping air filter lubed up...etc)

Later......
