I've just stripped one of my stock rims... not happy! so now I have a reason to get new ones... happy =)

My question is, since I've only got a 21, should I just stick with stock wheels? Personally, I'd like something that won't strip, such as the outback welds cos they don't use hexes (is that right?) and something which is a bit bigger to give better handling and traction. I'm worried about taking too big a performance hit.

Anyone here still got a trusty 21BB with non-stock rims?

I've got a savage 25 with the updated hexes and they still strip even if the nuts are tight. Personally I'm looking at alloy wheels so I can eliminate that from happening. I'm also upgrading my engine to a mach 26 which will put additional stress on my hexes especially when the tires can bite good. I've also got a set of hb dagger wheels with deathgrip tires on them and the area around the hex doesn't look to be as strong as the stock hpi wheels. I would imagine if the tires gripped better that they'd round out in no time as well. I don't know anything about the welds so I can't comment on them but if you do get them let us know about them.

TRAXXAS stock T-Maxx rims, RPM rims, ProLine rims, and IMEX rims all in plastic...all work. I have yet to strip any of them.

SkyMaxx, which of those rims are larger then the stock ones? will they hamper performance a lot?

also, what are bead locks?

I stripped my rears out already too. So I went with the Pro-Line Weld Super Singles, so far so good. But they do use hexes. Bead locks use a three piece rim design that lets you mount the tire without using glue. It has a ring that goes over the bead and screws together with the rim, they are made by Maximer. It makes changing tires much easier since you just take it apart, no trying to un-glue a tire from a rim. However they are quite a bit heavier than Pro-Lines or RPMs.

I saw these adaptors for sale at savage central, what rim are they for? is there much choice out there for beadlock rims? how strong are these 'Maximer' rims? will the extra weight make a big difference since I only have the 21? The idea of not having to muck around with glue is very appealing for me.

Just a little note for ya I have had great luck with the Hot Bodies predator rims I am running deathgrip tires and they grip well and perform just as good.

newnitrofan, are they bigger than stock? an extra bit of ground clearance never hurt anybody... have ur hexes started to round off or are they strong enough to withstand some abuse?

the problem is that down in oz its hard to get parts, and as I have to buy online I have to pay shipping each time. lol and aside from the fact I'm a poor university student, I want to make sure I get stuff that will last.

Jwan I've had my savage since December and it was a stock savage21 as part of the clean up and tear down process when I first got it I lost a wheel hex so I purchased another set of them. Well it also comes with the bolts to hold the tires in place and I think they are a four dollar purchase. Point being I still have 4 brand new wheel hexes sitting in my pit box. They are handy to have around though since the possibility is real that you might lose one or what have you. You also might want to look into the clamping wheel hexes from hot bodies. Think you can get them from tower hobbies.

The only set of rims that I listed that are larger than stock are the IMEX JumboMaxx rims.

The 21BB can handle all of the tires I listed excepting the IMEX JumboMaxx tires. You can run T-Maxx rims, ProLine rims, RPM rims, and a sundry of other T-Maxx flavored rims without any degrade in performance. I would venture to say that anything but the old stock Savage rims will hold up a ton better than the old stock Savage rims.

I run the Hyper 21 8-port and only notice a performance decrease when airborne while wearing the IMEX shoes.

All others are stock size and work just fine.

has anyone had any experience with pro-line outback welds with a 21? those suckers won't ever strip and I can just pick up the adaptors for savage central.

I've still got the .21 and i use the stcok tmaxx rims and tires and those work great. i also have the big joes and velocity rims which havent seen to wear out yet. the big joes dont really make a difference for me on performance.

What adapters are you so hung up on? You can run any T-Maxx rim on the Savage with the current wheel hex that comes on the Savage. That means no adapter is needed.

You can run the ProLine Outback Welds in both regular and 40 series if you so desire. They will work just fine.

Just so you are aware of this: The Savage was designed with parts compatibility in mind. It will take T-Maxx wheels in all varieties and T-Maxx shells also. The only time you would require an adapter for T-Maxx wheels is if the T-Maxx itself would require an adapter to take the wheel.

SO...if you like that style rim...go for it.

apparently they were originally for txt-1, the wheel apparently don't use hexes, hence no stripping

That might be the case, but the ProLine site lists a set of Outback Welds for the T-Maxx.

Like I've stated in this thread and a few have also mentioned...the only rims that seem to be stripping out are the Stock Savage rims. I have put almost every major brand of rim on my Savage including an alloy set...and the only, I mean only set that ever stripped out or showed any sign of stripping out was the set made by HPI for the Savage.

So, you can spend extra money on adapters if you want...but a good set of hexes and any non-stock Savage rim should do the trick.
