I am new to all of this and have been reading a lot of the post and I have been seeing people talking a about failsafes. What are they? What do they secificaly do? What brands are good? Any help would be great.

Thanks.

a failsafe is a circuit that plugs inline w/ a servo and you set it to perform a specific action when it looses signal or the battery goes low.....a safety switch.....most people plug their throttle / brake servo in to them and set it so their brakes are activated when they have a problem.....Ofna makes the small ones you see usually....Venom is the one a lot of buggy users preffer and I just got a new receiver that has one built in......the Rx types are usually only compatable w/ higher end radio gear and Digital servos

When signal is interfered with, they make the brakes come on. Or if the batteries get low, or something like that. They do not help you out when you loose your power completely, but thats what a throttle return spring is for! I use both ofna and venom failsafes, and they both work equally well.

With a stock t-maxx radio would I be able to use either the Venom or Ofna sailsafe? Does the stock t-maxx have a throttle return spring or is that something I need to add?

Any brand name failsafe will work on your T-Maxx. I put an XTM brand one on my wife's T-maxx. My Revo has an OFNA, as well as my OFNA Hyper 7 PCR buggy and RS4-3 ss road car. On my Thunder Tiger buggy, when it is done being built, will use a Venom. All of them plug into the receiver and then the throttle/brake servo.

I found a Dynamite failsafe on ebay for $12 for my maxx and it works great. It actually saved my butt this weekend when my neighbor's dog knocked my radio out of my hand and the batteries went everywhere.
The return spring is not stock, but don't pay for a namebrand one. Just go to Ace Harware or something like it and get a little spring for 50 cents. I attached mine to the front shock tower and to the servo horn on the throtle servo. Works pretty well.

You should attach the spring to the ball end of your throttle arm. Reason being is what good is the trs going to be if the ballcup pops off your carb? If it's on the servo, the car will still rev uncontrollably if the ballcup pops off.

If you have a slide carb, loop one end around the main body of the the HSN and the other end on the ballend of the throttle. If you have a rotary, loop one end around the ballend and the other end needs to be mounted someplace else. I used to unscrew one of the screws on the backplate of the engine and loop it there then retighten the screw after reapplying blue threadlock.

I made this cheezy little TR spring. Compact design but I had to fab that plastic pulley...
