What can i use instead of a rotostart? i have the rotostart backplate on but rotostart thing i haves faulty. is there anyway i can start it without the rotostarter? would a cordless drill do it?

I have used a corded drill before when my roto was dead. It doesn't spin the engine over quite as fast but as long as your tune is good it will start. Make sure you spin the engine the right way though. :2cents:

Cordless drill will work fine.

As mentioned, make sure you are spinning in the proper direction.

no itll spin both ways ithink. Last time i used the cordless drill didnt want to start up. I guess m drill sucks tho the battery was dead for that too

like everyone has said you can start it with a drill, but make sure the clutch is set on the softer side, you wouldnt want to do any damage to the motor...

It will spin freely clockwise, (one way bearing) and it will engage and rotate the engine counter clockwise.
It must be a reversible drill, and not all drills will spin with enough speed to start the engine.

I was starting my truck with a drill for 80% of its life so far. the backplate wasn't threadlocked in from factory so 2 of the 3 screws came out... drill fkd the rest. Make sure u put ur drill on WEAK (but fast)

Question though, my pullstart is only actually grabbing 3-4 times out of a possible ten. I.e, I pull the cord and instead of getting 6-7 cranks i get 1 or 2. do I need a new one way bearing?

If it pulls out freely, without spinning the engine, the one-way is slipping.
You can clean out the bearing and the shaft that it rides on with denatured alcohol. Slosh the bearing around, let it soak, then blow it dry. Do it a few times, and it should be good to go.
Eventually it will not help to clean it and that's when you'll have to replace it.

That's a different setup, jhague. I imagine it'd work great, but the downside is increased drag from the rotostart gears constantly turning.

I never really noticed a difference but I also never got to drive my truck much before it broke the one way.

Ya that would work well. Its doesn't spin the roto gears at all times. Once the engine is started the starter dis-engages, just like a regular roto setup.

I like that, no more one way bearing failures, and thats big when a guy can go through 3 or 4 a year!

Thanks.
