Zandor do you know if there is a minimum age for getting certified for welding. I am pretty good at welding and was just wondering. Also how hard is the test for the certification?

first you need to go and take a course a tec school or commuity collage..
i did mine through ojt at porttownsend paper CO.during my 5 year apprenticeship to become a millwright.

and i do belive you have to be 18 to get a cert.

and yes it will be hard if you have had no real training..i think i had 144 hours class time before i got my cert.and have been welding years prior to that..
you have to do it there way. you know how that goes

Ok thanks, just thought I'd ask since I found out that there was not an age limit for HVAC certification here. I hought that I could get certified for welding to go along w/ being sertified for HVAC which all I had to do for was watch my dad work from around age 5 and read a book. Thanks again.

I remember they waived the actual tech school since I had been taking welding in high school for 3 years before I go certified. I can't remember if I was 17 or 18 when I got my certification. The test is actually pretty easy for arc and mig, tig on the other hand was a little difficult when I was welding on titanium and magnesium but alum was a breeze.

el your right any one can arc or mig..its the tig welding on ti or mag.this is were you seperate the men from the boys..i perfer tig over any other.i do alot of stainless all day and to put down a roll of dimes takes a lot of pratice..

oh and i still suck at alum..i have a heavy foot lol..................i can do it but.its something if you don't do all the time its hard to lay down a good bead..well at least for me.i do it like once a year..

Well in Pa where my dad took his certs. He ask and they told him minimuim age is 17.But i would need to go there in like the summer and take some courses.

In Mn here there isnt a age limit but there is a type of apprenticeship where you have to have a certain amount of hours in before you can go for it. But not a age where you have to wait till you can do it. I first started welding when I was 7 and was taught by my dad whos a machinest for Excel energy, and also one of the best welders I've ever seen. I'm not certified as a welder, (basically because I'm in a different field) but I can gurantee I can weld circles around alot that are. Anyway, thats how it is in Mn. Welding is a good trade to have and comes in handy alot, at least for me. (Heli Arc is the poop!)

I dont agree with that. Zandor your the man but I think it takes alot of time and skill to perfect arc welding. Ill agree anyone can atempt it and get splatter all over and itll look like ass, but for someone to get a good hold, no splatter and nice and smooth, even welds it takes talent.

 your still my dawg though!

man i love welding i dont do it for a living but anytime one of my friends set up a welder i have to have a shot at it,i used a tig welding cranks for mopeds and motorcycles i love it and am going to buy one soon!! the tig rulez!!
p.s arc welding is for the puppys!!!

4u2nv thats how i am i started Arc welding when i was like 10,and it took about a year of practice on and off to get it down good. Then i learnt mig which was easy if you know arc and can lay down some nice beads. Now i am learning Tig.But here it uis either 17 or 16 but you just have to have a certain number of hours to take the test.

I'm gonna be a welder i figure ill go into the navy or something. that way ill have a job forsure untill retire (i hope) any way my whole family are welders and i can say i have alot of experience I'm not the best at dcen or dcep arc welding but i can weld the prettist mig beads you ever saw but then again who caint i started learning tig but school let out so I'm going back and taking advanced welding (tig, heliarch) 1 and 2 i hope I'm on the right track towoards my career

Addandy- there are several different forms of certification. I am (was) certified for AWS D1.1 and Mil Spec 1595A. D1.1 is for structural steel with arc (stick), and is what you need for stuff like trailer hitches and building construction.. I would have to say it is more difficult to make a good x-ray quality weld with stick than with Tig, because the test part is 3/8" thick, and you have to put down several layers without trapping any slag.

1595A is aerospace quality Tig on aluminum, titanium, stainless, etc. I passed for position 1 aluminum, .030 to 1/8 thick. It is a butt weld with argon back gassing on a grooved backup plate, for full penetration without oxidation on the back of the part.

Becoming certified is cool, but they expire after a year. Its not really necessary unless you are welding professionaly and your job pays for it, imo.

Well my cousin Welded then got back into landscaping, but my dad still welds structurel steel buildings,so i had the opertunity since i was little,i like mig better than stick but stick is also fun.i am getting in to tig so i can build a rollcage for my NMT.
