I pay $104 a month to those thieves and since I'm a renter I don't have any options for a dish.
I've been looking around and wonder if anyone has experience with Hulu Plus. I need Hi-Def and all the Discovery and History channels.
How about a Boku box or external receiver(?) or tuner like a PS3 or TIVO??

Are you renting a house or an apertment? Here in base housing, they mount the dishes to a fence pole, just an idea.

I don't pay quite that much for dish but I would like to dump it. I've been wondering about Hulu and Netflix. I'm interested where this thread goes.

I need...Discovery and History channels.

I looked at doing something like this about a year ago and in my opinion when you need content that isn't already played over the air then you're just about out of luck.

To my knowledge the only way of getting those channels w/o cable, is by steaming it from your computer by going to their websites.

Hulu Plus has some content from the History channel, not sure about Discovery, however the content is older content and not current.

I've had a Roku device as well, very cool device but still not a full cable replacement.

Might want to check out DirecTV, even as a renter they have ways to getting you up that might work for you and for me it was a bit cheaper... well when you don't include the Sunday ticket. ;)

They can't do a dish in an apartment? And $104!!!!???? I cancelled on a $40 cable bill lol.

I thought my $80 cable bill was a lot. Dish and DirecTV can install their dish in an apartment setting. I had DirecTV in my apartment in Austin and they zip-tied the dish to the railing on the patio. In my current apartment, they mount them on tripods beside the building.

The Roku, AppleTV, and the rest of the streaming boxes are pretty good for older TV shows and movies. I use both an older HDD based AppleTV and a Sony SMP-N200 streaming box and they have a great picture on my HDTV.

If you have the option of AT&T U-Verse and bundle it, (ISP, cable & phone) you won’t be sorry. I know it’s available in Knoxville, just maybe not in your location. Worth a look.

I'm in a high rise. Nothing allowed on the building or the lawn. Absolutely a monopoly here for Comcast.
I already use AT&T for my cell phone, house phone and internet. If they can get me their feed through the phone line, that's the only way I'll be able to use them here.

I hate monopolies…

That’s how U-Verse works; everything comes in on the phone line into a Brain/CPU unit they install. Its nice being able to scroll through all your RC pics and listen to all your music you have stored on the PC right on your big screen and good sound system at the touch of the remote.
Give them a call; the U-Verse may be available if the wiring in the building is up to par.
Saved me about $82.00 a month combined, and the service is great.

See about switching everything over to Comcast and doing a bundle. I just did an install today for $125 for data phone and hd.

I'm Proud to say I don't feed the cable company around here. If you want to watch the most recent stuff you will either have to watch it on hulu on your pc or go to sites like projectfreetv. Most new shows only are available on pc and not streaming devices like roku/xbox and things like that. Also most new things on hulu only stay there for a certain amount of days then it is taken down. I currently have netflix, hulu+ and rabbit ears for my tv. I'm completely happy since usually I wouldn't be able to watch the shows the night they air anyway, it does not bother me that hulu puts them on the site the day after. Also most programs you can watch on the providers website such as mtv, abc, cbs and such. Discovery will be you'r biggest problem to find programs online :(. History channel has some on the website but not alot.

Interesting article.
What bothers me the most is that I'm paying $104 a month and I'm being bombed by endless commercials. For that price I should have mostly commercial free content.
I have to watch with my remote in my hand because I'm on the verge of exploding every 10 minutes when I have to see another Progressive insurance ad with that stupid looking moron woman or listen to the awful voice of the Allstate guy.
I don't need purple pills or Trojan vibrators. I don't need Viagra. Erections lasting longer than 4 hours don't bother me. If I went to the hospital because of it, I'd be there looking for an attractive nurse.
I just want to watch Discovery channel in peace.

Good point. I forgot all about that since I built this new computer. My other one had a TV tuner card and built in TiVo but I could only get the 16 basic channels.
If I get one for the TV, will I be able to access all my channels without having to change the channel on the cable box?

The newer Series 4 TiVo boxes use a cable card and can access all of the channels you're supposed to. The TiVo then replaces the digital cable box. It can also stream media like the Roku off of the Internet.

I'm paying 135.00 for suddenlink cable, internet, and land line. I want to cancel my land line but that would make my bill go up figure that. the wife is checking on directv today.

Here's what I did Friday. I bought a TiVo box and on the way home I stopped at a Comcast office. The TiVo cost $168 plus $14.95 a month.
I knew a friend in New York had a DVR through his cable company so I thought I'd check.
Well, they handed me a brand new DVR at no charge and a promotion for $9.95 a month for 6 months, then $16.95 after that. I went back to Best Buy and returned the unopened TiVo. :)
I'll never watch TV the same again. I can back up or pause in a program I'm watching live and fast forward through commercials when I have shows recorded. Full HD and 5.0 sound.

I like it.:thumbup::celebrate:

I hate comcast as well. I tried to cancel my home phone that I" bundled" but they said it would be more with only cable and internet than having all 3. That is the kind on nonsense that comcast sells.

I have AT&T high speed DSL for my internet. A fer days ago I was working on someone's computer that had Comcast. I have no idea what the internet problem was, but a download to install Firefox took almost 10 minutes. My dial-up in the late 90s wasn't even that bad.
