I'm getting video surveillance equipment installed into my retail stores and wanted to get some feedback on a few things. By law I have to disclose that I have the equipment installed but am unsure on how I want to do it.

Share some thoughts and feelings on how video surveillance makes you feel.

I can make it bold and advertise the hell out of it to help drive off potential shoplifters, thief's and break ins or just have a little sign posted. I need to find if being recorded may offend people to the point that they wont shop with me of if its just a given these days that everyone knows and doesn't care.

if there not doing anything wrong i dont see why they should care.. but i would post it small and taistfull so its visible but may be overlooked.. then you can nail the little fucks that try to shoplift!! i wouldnt broadcast it unless youve had a BIG problem with shoplifting befor..

We discussed this very topic in my Torts class recently. The general opinion was that it is pretty much expected that you will be video taped while out in public. I have not heard of anyone that would be offended to shop in a store that had video surveillance

Ed, you know and I know that people don't pay any attention to any signs. We have a sign thats on a 4x8sheet that says you must report to customs before entering the united states. Do people read it? NO needless to say you could have the sign dangling in front of them the whole time they are in your store and won't see it. Just my experience.

Wait 'til you get to Con Law.

Anyhow, I am never offended and I agree with beason; if you are not a troublemaker, it would not usually cross most people's mind that the surveillance is a bother. I would actually prefer it in case their is a hold-up or some other crime committed while I am present in your store. The only time I feel a customer might feel it is an issue is when there are changing rooms.

As to signs, I would put a small sticker on the door advising people that the cameras are present, and then another sign on a sales counter (small) most likely near the cash register. Also, there is no legal requirement in the business and professions code in CA to have the actual cameras be the visibly operating. You can use dummies as well.

IMO it will only offend a dishonest person. I would have no problems with you having survailance, I would still gladly do buisness there.

I really hate theives!

i dont like all the cameras around the casinos. man is that shite annoying. i dont gamble but when i go to vegas to see concerts/shows and then go to the casinos to drink and i see all these cameras watching people. you can even make a nut adjustment without being seen.

casino cameras are very erie and make me uncomfortable. I'm a stand up citizen and way far from doing anything I'm not suppose to. it's awful sitting at the bar knowing your being watch like a hawk for drinking a beer.

as for store cameras i am not bother by those. only casino camers as there is one everywhere you look and turn besides the bathrooms. they prolly have them in the johns as well.

Right about now I expect to see a post from Ratzo asking if there are any cameras in the changing areas and we later hear about volunteering his exploits on film while changing.

I would think a sign on the door, would be fine. That's usually what I see around here. I've never understood people having a problem with video cameras in public places. It's a public place. Expect to be seen by someone, whether they're using a camera or not.

Me, I don't have a problem with cameras in stores. I expect it, and honestly enjoy seeing theives get caught. I like the idea of dummy cameras, too. I remember seeing footage one time where just before trying to rob a store, a guy covered the lens of two or three dummy cameras, but missed the live camera.

Your asking for my opinion, and it is the same as most of the people here.
If you have nothing to hide, why care if your on video?
I don't.
I feel safer.
If a thief knows there are cameras, less chance of the store being robbed while i'm in it.

I've never heard anyone make a comment in any of the stores I used to manage before I went to the Post office. Like everyone else said, if u have nothing to hide then u shouldn't worry about the cameras.

I would say most people don't even read the signs that are posted. I know I don't.

I pretty much assume that there are cameras in every store I go into and I could care less.

Cameras are so common anymore no matter where your at I dont even notice them anymore  unfortunalty but thats the way it is with so many dishonest people out there. Eddy I dont think you should worry as far as people not shopping in your store because of cameras. I think most people will understand that you are just protecting your buisness and not have a problem with it. Unless like stated above by others they are in youR shop up to no good! And in that case you should bust there ass and have them sent to jail. By the way what type of buisness do you own?

haha, Id have, "You are being watched" printed on the back of every receipt. Cause like nobody looks at the back of a receipt.......unless theres a rebate offer.

Even if I catch a shoplifter I would be afraid to hold them.
With my luck, I would get sued for unlawful detainment or worse yet, have to register as a sex offender.

In my old shop, I had a sigh that simply said "Smile, your on Camera" Then the companies names of the survalince equpiment I had. I never had any probs (Luckily), so it must have done the trick. I think I might know a guy who could make ya a sign for cheap too..hehe

personally, why SHOULD anyone care?? if there not doing anything wrong in the first place, they have absolutly nothing to worry about. If someone complains, keep an eye on them. they maybe a shoplifter.
