Every year my wife and I get a holiday gift for our self. I'm not sure what I want to get this year. I'm all RCd up and have been looking at the VEX robotic kits.

They are similar to the Erector sets of the past but now have an included TX and RX, Servos pulleys, Switches, Wheels and other available gadgets.

Has anyone used or played with this yet?

I played with it. It's okay...but FRUSTRATING!!!!! And it was very hard to get all the little screws to go in where they're supposed to. It's beyond putting balls in a ball bearing diff.

Ed's used to playing with small things anyway, so I don't think that would be much of a challenge. :D

Was the starter kit enough to do anything with?
And yes, Little things, Well.... I'm used to them

Ed, you have too much time on your hands. Robot kits? What next?

not really. It's like and erector set. You have to keep buying and buying. Thats why I sold it. The only thing I made was this lame robot that did nothing exept open and close it's mouth. I paid $300 for something and I had to get another $50-100 in accessory pieces. Get a new truck, it'd be better. Or maybe get into flying.

When Ed says he is RCd out he means he is RCd out. This was before your time, but ed had some fun flying with a security guard.

I'm looking for something other then RC to blow my X-mass wad on.
I have all the RC cars I want, 2 plains and 2 helicopters.

Well back to the drawing board.

I did see a mini metal lathe / mill at Harbor freight.

get a miniture steam engine. They're loads of fun. I have one that was built in the early 1900s in england that was my great-grandfathers. The mount is made out of a thing like erector metal stuff. It has a boiler and an opening on the bottem for you heat source. It's fun to see how fast you can make it and what's flamable and whats not. I have yet to use nitro...that'd be fast though. I'll try to find a picture.

Okay I Found some pictures and a site in Britian where you can buy them. Heres my pictures:

hey Ed, what about building your own battle bot from scratch?

have you looked into maybe going to a driving school? depending where you go, you have your choice of high end performance cars to beat the snot out of on different race tracks.

do you wear glasses? lasik surgery is well worth it, i got mine done this past january.

Battle bots never interested me more then just watching them but was a good idea.

Did the skip Barber Driving school 2 years ago. Had Lasik just after that. Its hard for me to find things to spend extra cash on. When I want something, I go get it or do it when it hits me. Trying to find something to spend money on is not something I'm used to doing..

i know back when i was interested in robots (i never bought one but thats only due to me not being smart enough :D) anyways this one caught my eye immediatley so maybe see what you can do with your own ideas on a robot.

try robotshop.com for kits they've got few actually nice kits in there once you get past the 4th grade science project type robots.

also www.robotics.com/robomenu has some pretty nifty pictures of some homemade robots (although i admit most are a little on the cheesy side.)

I know..
you can buy one of those boats..
the kind that you have to build from a pile of wood.....
and sand it real smooth.....
I betr that's something you'd like....and finish quickly for all to enjoy..:D

Or if you really want to spend money on something just buy me a new mill...I mean the P-5 is getting used up already it seems.....and a nice 421 would kick ass.....

Seriously Ed if we had to cash in all our chips in the game of life I think you beat us all.....Ed dies w/ the most toys........and wins???

how about you use the cash to take the wife on a cruise for a week?

cause seriously, if you going to spend the money, and you have to ask us what to get. just use it to DO something instead. either go somewhere, or do something with it. maybe fly some family in for the holidays that you dont get to see very often.

How about taking some real flying lessons...
Something I plan on doing when the house is paid off..

i went flying in a sailplane a couple times ...its a real rush when you cut away from the tow plane, knowing you have no engine to keep you up ....only thermals
