Right now I'm running a vertex .18... What engine would be a nice step up from this one? Also will I need to change the exhaust and carb when I change engines?

Here is some pictures that prolly will tell you alot more...

Wow, that looks just like the older HPI RS4. With that in mind, dropping in a HPI 18 should be pretty easy. Engines come with carbs, just make sure you pick the engine with the carb that fits your needs. Rotary or slide. The HPI version ran a rotary carb and seeing what I can see of your linkage, it looks like that one does too.

Not an "awesome" engine, but it gets the job done and should last a decent amount of time.

If your looking for more speed, you could probably get a decent .12 or .15 to go in there. More RPM's.

thanks for the info...

So any engines lower then .18 are faster? What is the difference then with a .21...

Depends on the 21. But in general, the larger the displacement, the more torque it has. So you can gear it higher for more top speed. But, you sacrifice raw RPM's.

.21's are big blocks and usually fit best in 1/8th scale vehicles.
Your car appears to be a 1/10th scale RS4 - which work best with small blocks.

The performance of an engine isn't fully defined by the size of the engine.
A high performance .12 engine can have more power and reach higher RPM's than a .15 or an .18 (although the larger engine should have better torque).

It's a similar concept as to how the 3.6 liter six cylinder in a Porsche 911 can have more horsepower and produce better performance than a 4.6 liter V8 in a Buick Lucerne.

I really wasn't trying to pick on the Buick - but yep, the Lucerne can come with a 4.6L Northstar pumping out 292 HP (so it's no dog) while a 911 Carrera with a 3.6L engine has 345HP.

If I was picking, I'd point out that Buick's 3.9L V6 has 227HP while a 911 Carrera GTS extracts 408HP from a normally aspirated (not turbo charged) 3.8L. They get another 122HP when they add a turbo to it.
Maybe now I'm picking... lol

would the HPI RS4 be a good car to buy with the vertex motor in as in tossing up between that or a Kyosho Fazer with a GZ.15 engine

The HPI does not come with an Vertex engine. They come with a HPI engine. They Vertex engine is what comes in semi knock off brands like Hi-Speed, RedCat, Himoto. If you are getting and RS4 with a Vertex it was put in there as a replacement and mind you Not a good replacement. Both are good cars actually but am more partial to HPI due to easy parts availability.

so the semi knock off ones with the vertex motor arent as good then compared to the rear HPI engines ?

Yeah I have had them and they are ok i guess but the actual HPI engines and vehicles are going to be a lot better. Now were are you getting an HPI with that engine in it. HPI is an actual brand of RC. One thing to keep in mind when you are buying an RC is parts support. Can you get parts for it. Lets face it if you play you will break stuff....we all do. If you pay say $150 for the car then can't get parts to fix it and end up having to buy another one then you would have been better off getting one with good parts support. I know I have been down this road before searching for hour and days even trying to get parts. It is maddening sometimes. Just advise though....
