Looking on a local site for classifieds and stumbled apon a Traxxas Slayer 3.3
The description is as follows:

Motor in great shape well maintained, only about one gallon of fuel ran though it. It is used so the body is a little banged up. Chassis is in great shape all in working order. needs new bell clutch shoes(they didn't wear out the alignment holes broke causing premature failure, thats how much power this thing has.)new ones are about 18 bucks, and the front and rear bumper braces are cracked. please call if you have any questions.

He also told me that the truck was always ran rich to keep it at a cooler running temp, always did after-run oil and did WD before he put it away.
Hes asking 190 and comes rtr and just curious as if this is worth picking up?
If not I'm going to get an Axial SCX10 with a honcho body kit..

Thanks guys

for that price, to me, it sounds a little too good be true. I would go with the SCX-10 anyways so I say no. JMO though

Point taken, its a local drive so what should I look at to determine if this baby is really a good price? I'm going to check all moving pieces and the compression but what can I do to keep on the safe side by making a smart purchase or leaving it be?

well if would ask him some technical stuff like, last time he changed the diff fluid, what the shock oil weight is, have him start the engine and drive it for a little bit. Just run him down on the truck and see if he know his stuff, if not you obviously shouldn't take the deal.

Well with the bell clutch shoes busted will she still be drivable or just like a revving?

oh yea, i forgot about that. So, no it wont be driving if he can start it though just listen to the idle and see if you think it is tuned right or not.

If the guy's too lazy to fix the clutch to make a sale, he's hiding something. And running an engine rich isn't the best thing for them either.

I'm definantly thinkin I am going to surpass the slayer and go with the sc8 or a baja later on, I'm getting that scx10 for sure

Thanks guys

personally i have a slayer that i purchased used and i love the truck. i did blow the motor after about a gallon but i believe it was more my fault then the seller lying to me. i know i can't talk for this truck but over all i love my slayer

Traxxas, no thanks I wouldnt get it. Traxxas products are too high tech so they take more maintain compered to others plus when something goes wrong with it it's always more than one thing. It will seem like one thing at first but when you think its fixed the other problem will pop up out of nowhere. I have a T-Maxx and after the 1st year owning it, it has been problem after problem since. Its not always the best to have an advanced R/C. The SC8 is also something I wouldnt go for. Team AE doesn't make the most reliable products, if you want to get a short course truck, go with HPI. Plus if you want to go nitro, than I wouldnt recommend a short course, I would actually recommend getting a truggy or a buggy preferably XTM Racing or Team Losi. Its a good deal for $180, but in the long run it will cost you more money than something more simple, yet just as good if not better performance than a Traxxas. Hope this helps

AE unreliable? Traxxas too advanced? First time I've ever heard these two statements. How about naming some of these problems you have had with your Maxx? I'm curious now...

I went through 3 metal geared steering servos in 2 weeks due to the receiver short circuiting because the radio short circuited (Maxx caught on fire) and now the Traxxas radio works backwards so now I have to switch the crystal with my Blitz radio to drive it. The transmission on them are terrible, I've had trani problems since year 2 and theyre only getting worse after being worked on and apparently fixed time and time again. I had the chassis plate brake and had to buy a new one. Two times I had to replace the engine mount. The reverse system is garbage and doesn't even work which I have only used twice. Bent 2 shocks and I take good care of all my RCs. I have had a problem with every single part on that Maxx except the chassis plate at least 2 times. Now the only stock traxxas parts on the truck is the waterproof parts, the garbage tranni, and the 3.3 and the EZ start (only things Traxxas makes thats worth anything). Everything else on it is completely aftermarket and the only things that are having problems right now is that garbage Traxxas tranni. Spent almost $3000 worth of parts on it. Not too impressed with Traxxas at ALL....... and for AE, I know someone that owns 3 MGTs and an RC10GT which are all garbage. He saw me jump my T-Maxx after putting all the aftermarket parts on it jump this curb by my house (maybe 3" tall curb at the most) and decided he wanted to do it with his MGT..... bad idea. He broke 3 suspension arms , bent a shock, and tore a tire off going very close to the same speed as me and hit it at the same angle. Hes had the tranni on that exact MGT 5 times and gone through 3 carbs. His other MGT had the entire front end destroyed after a normal flip. His 3rd MGT has only torn up 1 spur gear because after it tore up the decided to put it in their closet for the next 3 years after the problems with the other 2. Never did put a whole gallon through a single one. His best RC ended up being his RC10GT which he attempted to race 3 different times and he never finished a single heat race with it. When it hit the landing, its weak suspension allowed the truck to slam the ground and he bent the aluminum chassis. He also has an micro MGT thing which has had to replace all 4 tires twice. His best RC was his Losi LST2 which has actually finished races! unlike his AE trucks. He decided to give up on AE and switch to Losi (good choice) Also at my last race I saw those SC10s race, most of the 4 SC10s finished but never came close to the lead until they got lapped that is. I also pit with a guy that has 2 Traxxas Slash and basically did a start and park every race. And finally another guy I pit with (one of the best racers around here) runs a revo platinum only finished 1 race (heat 2) last time out, and he always talks about how much he hates Traxxas and wants to get a different MT. Not a fan of either companies and I dont recommend them to anyone. If you would like to know what I recommend then its :first_place: XTM Racing, :second_place: Team Losi, :third_place: Ofna, and HPI/Hotbodies. I hope this helps explain why I dont care too much for Traxxas and Team AE. If you like either Traxxas or AE I have no problem with that, I'm just sharing my past experiences and opinions of them. If you like them so be it, I'm not trying to make enemies here but just trying to help make decisions with my past experiences with them. Good luck and good racing/bashing whatever one you do. :D

Personally, the novelty of a slayer wore off on me pretty quick and I converted mine to a revo. I guess if I had a track or something it would have stayed a slayer a bit longer... but I think your making a good choice with this particular rig. I know if I was selling a rig and the only thing broken on it was a set of shoes, I'd be fixing the shoes, especially if it was to be a local pick up. I'd pretty much expect a guy to want to see/hear it run.

Besides, shoes are $8. Where he got $18 I don't know. Spend the $8 and sell a working truck for cripe sakes! If he exagerates that much about the price of shoes... makes you wonder just how "rich" he ran it and how "well maintained" it was.
