I've been working on tuning my rig, and I've been using the chart posted on this forum, but it doesn't account for a second gear. So my problem is my engine bogs down in second gear and won't go anywhere until is drops back to first. First is fine
 
I've actually read that page, but it's been a while. I'll go re-read that. I checked the temps after a tank and it was running about 276. I know it's not too lean because it's got lots of smoke
 
I'd check for leaks. Tank cap, header, coupler, fuel lines to start. I'd actually take the time to seal the entire engine if you haven't already. I've had issues with TRX mills where the needles adjusted themselves as well.:) They didn't leak, just fit loose. A little blue locktite on the lsn worked like a charm. I rigged the hsn. Wrapped a zip tie around the hsn, letting the tie contact the needle and banjo fitting. It was ugly but worked great. New o-rings would probably have solved this problem correctly.
 
One of the guys at my LHS said that the TRX engines didn't need to be sealed..
 
It's a good idea, it may save you from thinking you need to buy a new engine from your lhs because that one runs like crap ;)
 
I wouldn't go as far as buying a new one. Maybe spending the money to it tuned by the lhs
 
I know, that was just a little sarcasm, I have seen too many people spend money they didn't need to only because they took the advice from a lhs employee lol.
 
Not all hobby shop employees are knowledgeable about the RC products they sell. Most of them are minimum wage guys just there to make some money, not really to help customers. If you can find one that actually knows his stuff, keep him in business.
 
The only problem with that is that the best hobby shop is about 30 minutes away
