I've been having some trouble tuning my 3.3. I have (what I believe) is the correct amount of blue smoke coming from the pipe, but I'm overheating. I don't have a temp gun so I use the good ole spit test and she boils away immediately. I pull the plug from her and its still wet. I don't understand why I'm overheating and still not burning all the fuel.

If anyone has any form of information, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Adam

Maybe air leak somewhere. Sounds like your richening it up and its still running lean. Just my guess, somebody on here can be more helpful with your question I'm sure. Is their oil residue around the motor... usually a line of oil coming from front bearing, if bearing is shot.

I can look. It's a brand new motor that was just broken in a week or so ago so I don't see why a bearing would be shot already.

I looked at the front bearing and crankcase and didn't see any damp spots so I don't think there is a leak there.

Any other ideas?

It's most likely an air leak. Do a complete seal job on the engine, make sure the exhaust coupler is secure and that the fuel system is leak free. Check the head bolts for tightness as well.

I'll do that. I'll go out tomorrow and get some sealant. Any particular brand recommended?

Thanks bud. I got it sealed up today and I'm going to run it tomorrow and see if there is any difference

So, I sealed the engine last night and took her out today....what a difference. I left the carb settings where I had them before sealing it and there was so much more power coming from that engine. I've still got to sit down and actually tune it but, like I just stated, I can already see a noticeable change.

Thanks for the help

Check the brass nut on the hsn i have had this loosen up on me before which can also cause an air leak be careful tightening it if is loose you can easily strip it or crack the carb itself if you're not careful. About 1/4 turn should be enough. Also pay attention to where your hsn is set at as it will turn when you tighten the nut

I sealed everything but the HSN when I first sealed the engine. I just sealed the HSN 2 days ago because I found a gas leak coming from where the washers are supposed to seal. I just took it out for a run today and now I'm dieing on the top end. But, its an intermittent problem. Out of about 10 high speed runs, it died 3 times. When I sealed the HSN, I took out the two washers (I followed what the "sealing an engine" thread said).

So, what could be causing the loss of power when my settings are at factory? I'll go look for any cracks in the carb in just a minute, but I don't recall over-tightening the HSN. I went until it was snug.

Wow, you nailed that one on the head. I don't know how I missed that but great call. I think this statement should be edited into that thread.
