I've been reading about tuned pipes and it seems the correct way to do it is to get the pipe and "tune" the pipe to your car. How many people actually do this as opposed to just slapping a pipe on the car and calling it good?
 
I've' havent heard of Tuning a pipe. They already come this way and there really is no way you can tune it. I remember the stock mufflers from HPI have a baffle in which you can remove. but a tuned pipe usually can't come apart. I recently insatalled a THS pipe on my 18SS. I love that tinny sound.
 
I've had to tune a pipe to match the engine, a good example is Axial .32's, they love pipes like the Ofna 086 with a small ID stinger and I've JB Welded stingers of different sizes to match the performance of the engine.
That was the only way to gain higher end power without killing the low end.
 
The article I was reading was talking about changing the length of the pipe by adjusting the joint between the header and the pipe. This will change the length the sound waves travel before bouncing back to supercharge the cylinder.
 
it'll effect it yes. Lots of people out there don't even notice a difference, so they don't bother with it. For those of us with a header connected to the pipe via springs... we just run as is. There is nothing we can do.
 
Would washers work? I'm a complete noob so this might be a dumb question.
 
Put a small piece of brass or aluminum tubing between the pipe and header, longer gives more low end shorter gives more high end.
