My TRX 3.3 just blew a hole in the piston!

Just doing straight runs in the park, and it just stopped after I filled another tank up. I knew straight away SOMETHING was broken.

I had about 7 litres through it (2 gallons).

I just ordered $350 of parts from Amainhobbies too :(
Hitec servo, Vantage carbon fiber sidepipe and other stuff.

Should I grab an OS .18 or go something more powerful?
Or rebuild it? Stripping the whole REVO now.

Running 40 series wheels and only bash, I have geared it down for torque so would rather a high torque engine that a high speed one.

I don't know whether to cry or laugh :

send it back to traxxas, they have had a run of them busting con rods and blowing the pistons. they may replace it for free, and if they do, sell it and buy the .18!!

Thanks, I will email them and if they say they will/or there is a good chance of replacing it, I will send it to them. I live in Australia so I don't want to waste weeks and postage if they WILL NOT replace it.

I think I will still buy the OS or something better, I can't go weeks without it my Revo !

New engine, pipe and freshly cleaned body and parts, it's gonna be like a new truck ;)

If Traxxas replaces that engine they will have to be considered for the best cs ever...or the dumbest.

I just got a response to my email.

"Hello Aaron,

I cannot discount the possibility that it would be covered. The piston
failure was a direct result of the con rod failure. The engine has
obviously seen a fair amount of use so between that and the fact that it is
7 months old I suspect that it would not be covered as a warranty
issue. You are welcome to send it in and let one of our lab techs make the
decision though. If they determine that it cannot be covered you will have
the option of doing the engine exchange for a new engine.

Here are the engine exchange
details. http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitro/erp/trx_erp-33.htm

The engine exchange cost for the TRX 3.3 Racing Engine is $130.00 plus
$30.00 shipping to international destinations.

Quick response on that which is good.
I just bought the .18TM anyway... hope it turns up this week.

You will like the OS, it runs great and easy to find it's sweet spot.

Arrrg....me too

10 years later impressive :D check the date of the last post before yours.

I thought to myself, "wow! I haven't seen one of these threads in a while." Turns out its the same one from when I was in high school. Oh the memories.

And Traxxas customer service hasn't changed since then either. I contacted them around a year or so ago and asked them about the problem with the connecting rod and they told me that they weren't aware of any problems. Hahahahahahaha.....................that's funny.

Obviously, why would they admit a very long standing problem? After further disassembly, it looks like the con rod split in half, still attached at both ends

Attached at the wrist pin but separated from the piston so basically the end with the wrist pin punched through the piston. Uh...sounds like a bad case of crappy casting

It not the casting, it's the design. There is no bushing in the top of the rod for the wrist pin. it's just a hole drilled into the rod. It keeps getting hammered until it fails. That's why anyone who wants to run a Traxxas engine has to purchase an after market rod like the one made by David Diesel for around $40.
