Hi Folks,

in the Guide to rebuild a TRX 2.5 Engine, it instructs to put a drop of mobil one onto the connecting rod and other reciprocating engine parts. I am not rebuilding my engine but would like to protect it better during longer storage...
I use WD 40 for afterrun maintenance and crank the engine for a total of about 45 seconds. Since the engine is lubricated through the fuel, I assume to have the "washdown effect" with the WD 40 but what else can I do to lubricate the engine during storage? I find WD40 to be a good short term lubricant. Would it make sense to finish my after run maintenance with a few drops of MOBIL1 Oil right on the piston?

From that post, I gather that wd-40 does not harm the engine if you get it in the mill. I wanted to ask the same question.
 
Must have been a stupid question, considering the response ratio.
Traxxas will tell I guess.

P.S.: WD40 is the recommended afterrun lubricant for storage, together with regular After-run oil.

Never been a fan of WD-40 as long-term after-run. It works for a bit because it helps displace moisture in the case and can prevent rust. But it will eventually evaporate and leave a sticky residue behind. I'm all for using any straight-up after-run oil or many have recommended Marvel Mystery Oil for engine storage. They should be more stable over time and will prevent seizing and rusting.

Ed Bridges (EB Mods) says in capital letters for his engines DO NOT USE WD-40 for ARO. I know a lot of guys use Marvel Mystery Oil, me it's rare I put anything in at all, though I run almost weekly.
 
What about Mobil1?

As in automotive oil? if so NO! You should use after run oil that is made for these itro engines. The automotive oil is different blend. I would say stick to the Marvel oil or any After run oil you can get at your LHS.
 
Okay, that makes sense... so there is really nothing you can do to keep it clean.

Well what WD-40 can do is actually weaken the rubber. Meaning the seals. Its weird since Traxxas says to use it. I actually use after run oil.

I guess if you were going to use it in your engines, I would contact Traxxas on their opinion. I have been using ARO in all my engines and they still run like a top. Ask me about my driving skill and that will be a short story.

Still I don't trust that WD40 stuff, can't imagine that this will not leave some heavy dudy sludge behind, considering how my engine sputtered when I started it last time...

WD-40 has been fine for me for short peroids. I have used the MM oil, but IF you have a "filled" crank, like on some higher end mills, it will break down the bond. On yours it should be fine.

Good point about the crank. I'm actually one to usually use ARO.
