Truggyracers Hacked

Yet another reason why a webmaster should not count on free forum software :\

Sad to see it attacked - hope he at least had backups.

poop, I know Chris was helping out the CRCRC guys when their club forum got hacked. I thought he had some pretty good security though. That's a pisser.

Two for two - guess not that good ;) - then again phpBB is also a free forum software :\

It's a shame to see this crap.

Funny you say that Zandor - I just dropped some $$$ this afternoon for a server/security admin to come check out the server, run updates, install patches, tweak and install any further security measures.

Granted no server 100% full proof but about every other month that's just one more expense for RCNT and one I have no problem spending either.

pathetic that people get there rocks off by being an moron to others

I couldn't agree more - do you know if the admin has backups?

I meant when CRCRC got hacked, he was letting them use his board for some stuff until they got up and running again. He was not the admin there (CRCRC)

It's back up. He had to resort to some footwork with another person's acount to get back in, but he owns the board. All hail CRS.

Strange thing though, my original announcement post for this isn't here anymore, "Truggyracers is down". Weird. Did someone edit it out?

If you checked your PM's you'd know why it's gone.

Don't usually get mail, so I forgot to check. Good to see that you guys are secure.

It sure does suck when you get hacked. Over at a site i work at we have taken tons of steps to help protect the site. Its very hard. I hope he can do some work to make it work better. As Woodie said earler free systems arent good.

Well, he was hacked cause one of the admins on the site got a worm and it sniped his password. Once the guy got in he started knocking people out. Chris was able to backdoor in and knock the hacker back out. Anyway, not one to usually talk about other forums here, as RCNT is tops on the net, but truggyracers does have some really good info for being 95% truggy oriented.

Jet,

I hope this isn't what the admin of the site believes. The odds of tracking down one user on a forum, getting them infected with a trojan then find out their password, while possible is highly unlikely.

I'm willing to bet money one of two things happened. One the forum admin/mods use very weak passwords which was brute forced then access into the forum was given or two the hacker has used an exploit within the forum software (very likely in a free forum software) and then gained access to the admin panel from there.

From what I've read over at the site only one account stood and it's email and password was changed which makes me believe that account was brute forced attacked.

Moral of the story, keep strong passwords and many layers of security!
