After running over 3 gallons of fuel through my Savage, I thought I was going to be exempt from the notorious "tranny set screw problem". But NO... it finally happened. No second gear and the truck's wheels will only roll foward. I took the tranny apart and found where the set screw had loosened itself up. When you tighten this back up, I know to use threadlock, but do you tighten it as far as it will go? Or is does this screw have some sort of adjustment?

There are two screws as you know. the screw that holds the silver part to the shaft should be all the way in and tight.. the other set screw that is on an angel is the ajustment screw for the shift point of second gear and should not be all the way in or the truck will never shift.

I know about the screw that adjusts the shift points, I just didn't know if the second screw needed to be all the way in and tight or not. Thanks for the info.

Do a local site search here on \"set screw" AND "tranny"\ (less backslash delimiters). Bunch of good hits.

I went over this on another thread about a new savage not shifting, and it was due to a different problem. Anyway, here's how to set the shift point.

Run the adjustment screw all the way in, and then back it out 1.5 to 2 turns. Fire up the truck and hold it off the ground. Slowly apply throttle and see if it shifts. Don't punch it, cause it might go right into second. Once you feel it shift, adjust it so that it shifts closer to the high side of the rpm range. Now put the truck on the ground (preferably on pavement) and go through the same proceedure as when the wheels were off the ground. Keep doing this until you have the shift point where you want it. The last step it to hit the dirt and try it there.

Be sure to put a tiny bit of loctite on the adjustment screw when you put it back in. Otherwise it'll just back out again. Also, be careful not to get any loctite on the shift lever, the ball or the spring because it will lock the lever so that it won't shift at all. Here's the thread on what happens and how to fix that:

I hope this helps.
Whitt....
